Liana Liberato was fourteen years old when David Schwimmer cast her to star in Trust in 2010. It was not a gentle start or a typical teen story. That role as a victim of an online sexual predator earned her the Silver Hugo at the Chicago Film Festival and put her on the industry's radar before she finished high school.
She was born in Galveston, Texas, in 1995. Her first steps as an actress came in the community theater of her hometown before her family decided to try their luck in Los Angeles. The path of child actresses is often a trap of precarity and oblivion if the initial material is not chosen wisely.
That performance earned her the Best Actress award at the Chicago Film Festival.
In 2011, she worked alongside Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman on Trespass. The film was a resounding commercial flop, grossing only 24,000 dollars in its limited U.S. release. Still, Liberato learned there how chaos works on a major production when things go wrong, and how big names aren't enough to save a weak script.
In 2014, she took part in The Best of Me, a Nicholas Sparks adaptation that aimed to repeat the mass appeal of other romantic dramas. The film barely reached 35 million dollars at the box office against a budget of 26 million. So the actress decided to seek out projects with a darker psychological edge to move beyond youth-oriented typecasting.
And the bet on realism paid off.
In 2017, she shot To the Bone under the direction of Marti Noxon. The script tackled anorexia with a rawness that sparked debate in industry media for its visual honesty. She played Kelly, the protagonist's stepsister, providing a much-needed counterpoint in a story shot in just 28 days of intensive production.
Before shooting The Last Thing Mary Saw in 2021, she immersed herself in period horror films. This independent film, shot in New York, explored religious fanaticism and folk horror with a minimalist aesthetic. It was the first sign that her career felt at home on the fringes of the suspense genre.
In 2023, she joined the cast of Scream VI, playing Quinn Bailey. Filming in Montreal stood in for the streets of New York for cost and tax-incentive reasons for the production company Spyglass Media Group. The film grossed more than 168 million dollars at the global box office and returned Liberato to the front lines of commercial visibility.
Her character was a key piece of the plot puzzle.
That same 2023, she appeared in the series Based on a True Story alongside Kaley Cuoco. The show parodies America's obsession with true crime and the investigative podcasts that flood digital platforms. Liberato plays the younger sister, a supporting role she filmed just as the writers' strike began to bring California studios to a halt.
The contract for the second season of this series was signed under the new SAG-AFTRA union terms following 118 days of work stoppage in the industry.
