Before turning twelve, she had already filmed sixty TV commercials. Lindsay Lohan didn't break into film through the back door; she did it as a product designed for advertising effectiveness through Ford Models. Her freckled face fit the family-friendly aesthetic of the nineties, which allowed her to move into television with the series Another World in 1996.
In 1998, Disney was looking for a girl who could carry a remake of a 1960s classic. The production of Parent Trap required a single actress to play two twins with different accents. Lohan made audiences forget the split-screen visual trick, and the film grossed 92 million dollars worldwide.
And the gamble paid off.
After that debut, her Disney contract became a gilded cage. In 2003, she starred in Just My Luck alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, and critics acknowledged that her comic talent was real. But the pressure to maintain that image of a perfect teen began to clash with the reality of a young woman living under the constant scrutiny of paparazzi in Los Angeles.
In 2004, Mean Girls changed the course of teen comedy. Tina Fey gave Lohan the role of Cady Heron, and the movie became a reference point for an entire generation. That same year she tried to diversify her career with the album Speak, because young stars of the era were expected to be multimedia under contract.
The industry doesn't forgive silence.
Between 2006 and 2007, control over her career fell apart. The shoot for Herbie Fully Loaded was marked by delays and health problems that the tabloids exploited mercilessly. In 2007, she starred in Scary Movie…
Lohan stopped being a safe investment and became a very expensive, uninsurable risk. The following years were marked by minor roles in independent productions such as The Canyons in 2013. That film, directed by Paul Schrader, was shot on a minimal budget of 250,000 dollars, partly raised through crowdfunding.
She decided to step away from Hollywood to find breathing room in Europe and the Middle East.
In 2014, she moved to London to make her stage debut in David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow. It was a strategic move to regain the respect of the industry, far from the American tabloids. She later settled in Dubai, where she found the privacy that California consistently denied her.
Her return to mainstream film was no accident but a carefully planned move. In 2021, she signed a multi-film deal with Netflix to star in and produce several holiday movies. In 2022, she premiered Falling for Christmas, and viewership data confirmed that her name still carried massive commercial value on streaming platforms.
In 2024, she strengthened this partnership with the release of An Irish Wish, where she also worked as an executive producer to control her image and shooting schedules. The deal with the platform includes a third film titled Our Little Secret, slated for late that same year. So her return to the spotlight has been managed through financial control, not just acting.
In August 2024, filming began in Los Angeles on the sequel to Freaky Friday, directed by Nisha Ganatra. The production has a traditional studio budget and the return of much of the original cast from two decades ago. The shooting schedule calls for principal photography to wrap in November of that year, with a release planned exclusively for theaters.
