Liza Minnelli was born in a Los Angeles hospital room while her mother was already the most famous woman in the world. There was no break for her. By the age of three she was already in front of a camera for the final scene of In the Good Old Summertime. But her destiny was not to repeat the steps of Judy Garland; it was to survive them.
The weight of the family name was a burden she turned into fuel.
In 1965 she won her first Tony for Flora the Red Menace. She was only 19 years old. She was the youngest woman ever to win in that category, and it silenced the doubts of New York critics of the time. She was no marketing product or a mere shadow. She had a voice that vibrated with a distinct urgency.
Before shooting Cabaret in 1972, Liza had already undergone surgery to refine her nose and had polished a visual style that would define the aesthetics of the seventies. Bob Fosse didn’t want her at first because he was looking for something rawer and less polished. But she showed up with false eyelashes and the bowl cut she had copied from European magazine models.
She won the Oscar for Best Actress in 1973. That night she beat Maggie Smith and Diana Ross. The film grossed more than $42 million on a modest budget for the studio's ambitions. And the whole world became obsessed with her character, Sally Bowles.
But the Hollywood industry never quite knew what to do with a woman who filled the stage more than the screen. In 1977, she starred in New York, New York under the direction of Martin Scorsese. The shoot was total improvisational chaos, where the chemistry between the actors mixed with substance use on set.
The decades of the eighties and nineties were a constant dance between rehab centers and triumphant returns to Broadway stages. In 1981, she shot Arthur alongside Dudley Moore. The film was a massive box office hit that gave her financial breathing room for nearly a decade.
Her health began to take a relentless toll.
In 2000, doctors told her she would likely spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair after suffering viral encephalitis. She refused to accept the diagnosis. She trained every day for months to dance again, and in 2002 she premiered her show Liza's Back in New York and London. Tickets sold out within hours.
Her role on the series Arrested Development from 2003 onward introduced her to a generation that knew nothing about the golden years of American musical theater. She played Lucille Austero with a comic flair that surprised the network executives. She took a fraction of her usual fee just for the joy of working in a sharp comedy format.
In 2010 she made a brief appearance in the sequel to Sex and the City, performing a version of a Beyoncé song. It was one of her last big-budget choreographed performances. Her final high-profile public appearance was at the 2022 Oscars ceremony alongside Lady Gaga. That night the ceremony's technical script was revised three times to fine-tune her entrance onto the stage.
