Macaulay Culkin earned 100,000 dollars for screaming in front of a mirror in 1990.
That figure seems ridiculous compared with the 8 million his father demanded just four years later. The boy with rosy cheeks and a mischievous gaze became Hollywood's biggest box office asset before he turned twelve.
Kit Culkin managed his son's career with an iron fist that ended up suffocating the major studios. The success of Home Alone was no accident. Before that, the young actor had already held his own opposite John Candy in Uncle Buck during 1989.
There was no escape from the phenomenon.
In 1991 came My Girl. It was the first time audiences saw the child idol die on screen, and the collective trauma translated into a multimillion-dollar box office. But his father's creative control began to take a toll on the sets.
Kit's demands that Macaulay star in The Good Son in 1993 forced the studio to give in under threat of canceling other projects. The industry began to see the boy as a package of trouble tied to the ambitions of a domineering father.
And the industry paid dearly for it.
When the actor turned 14, he decided that was enough. He stepped away from cameras and sued his parents to regain control of his fortune, estimated at $17 million. That break lasted almost a decade.
During that time the tabloids tried to devour his image. Talk of addiction and physical decline circulated, and the grainy photos in the yellow press exploited it cruelly. But he was simply living a teenage youth that had been stolen from him by spotlights and predatory contracts.
Silence was his best investment.
He returned in 2003 with Party Monster. He wasn't trying to win back lost fame but to blow up his good-kid image by playing a murderous party promoter. It was a risky move. Critics were divided, but he proved he could work without his father's shadow looming over the set.
Because his interest was no longer in red carpets. In the following years he explored music with The Pizza Underground, a band that covered Velvet Underground songs with lyrics about pizza. It was a private joke that became a world tour.
In 2021, he took part in the tenth season of American Horror Story. His performance as Mickey earned him the respect of an industry that had written him off artistically. He delivered an unsettling physical presence that had nothing to do with his childhood work.
In 2023 he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At the ceremony, Catherine O'Hara gave a speech reminding everyone that this boy had carried one of the most profitable franchises in film history on his own.
He lives far from the Los Angeles spotlight most of the time. His name appears as executive producer on several independent projects that rarely make it to big-budget commercial theaters.
In 2024, he still runs his comedy portal and satirical podcast Bunny Ears. His net worth remains stable thanks to wealth management that began the day he decided to fire his own parents.
