Macon Blair doesn't look like a movie star. That's exactly why he works so well on screen. For years, this Virginia native worked on the fringes of the industry, taking tiny roles and writing scripts nobody seemed eager to shoot. Everything changed when his childhood friend, Jeremy Saulnier, decided to go all in on a single card.
In 2013, Blair starred in Blue Ruin. To finance it, Saulnier had to mortgage his house and use his life savings. The film tells the story of a drifter seeking revenge, and Blair's performance was an absolute revelation. His portrayal of Dwight Evans steered clear of action movie clichés, because it conveyed real fear and a human awkwardness that made viewers squirm.
Blair is the anti-hero by definition.
That project not only gave him international visibility but also showed he could carry the weight of a raw narrative. In 2015 he reunited with Saulnier for Green Room, playing a supporting but crucial character in a neo-Nazi siege thriller. But Blair didn't want to limit himself to acting in front of his friends' cameras.
His move into writing and directing happened naturally. In 2017, Netflix premiered his directorial debut, I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. The film is an odd mix of black comedy and suburban thriller that reflects his personal obsessions very well.
And the gamble paid off.
That same year, the Sundance Film Festival jury gave him the Grand Jury Prize in the American Dramatic category. It was a commanding statement that confirmed his ability to handle complex tones without losing momentum. Rather than chasing big commercial projects, Blair chose to keep exploring genre cinema with a wry, ironic eye.
In 2018, he wrote the screenplay for Hold the Dark for Saulnier. It is a dark story set in Alaska about wolves and the violence inherent in human beings. The script stands out for its dryness and for avoiding unnecessary explanations for the audience. That's how his name began to get noticed in major studio offices as a screenwriter capable of bringing grit and realism to mid-budget productions.
Despite his success behind the camera, Blair never gave up acting. In 2017 he appeared in Steven Soderbergh's Logan Lucky, and in 2020 he joined the cast of the series I Know This Much Is True. But his most high-profile role to date came in 2023 with the release of Oppenheimer.
Christopher Nolan cast him to play Lloyd Garrison. In this film, Blair shares tense scenes with Robert Downey Jr. in closed-door offices where the protagonist's political future is decided. His presence in a production of this caliber shows that his profile fits perfectly into large-scale auteur cinema.
In 2023, filming wrapped on his new version of The Toxic Avenger. The film stars Peter Dinklage and Kevin Bacon. The project marks his return to directing, with a production that has an estimated budget of $120 million. Blair has kept the gory, irreverent tone of Troma's original work while adapting it to today's technical standards.
The film had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin in September 2023.
