Maeve Dermody first appeared on screen in 1993. She was five years old, and her mother, film theorist Susan Murphy Dermody, directed her in Breathing Under Water. It was an early debut, but it didn't spark an immediate ambition for fame. She grew up in a home where films were analyzed before they were ever shot.
During her teens in Sydney, she combined acting classes with a solid academic education. She was not the typical child prodigy desperate for attention.
In 2007 came her first real breakthrough with Black Water. This crocodile horror film required the actress to spend weeks in real mangrove swamps in northern Australia. The shoot was physical and exhausting. International critics took notice of her ability to convey fear without slipping into melodrama.
And the gamble paid off.
Her acting recognition came with Rachel Ward in 2009. In Beautiful Kate she played Toni, a complex role that earned her nominations at the Australian Academy Awards. She worked alongside Ben Mendelsohn and Bryan Brown in a story full of family secrets.
That stage of her career in Australia wrapped up with appearances in series such as Serangoon Road in 2013. But the national market felt too small for her restrained style. She decided London was the logical next step for her dramatic range.
She packed up and moved to the United Kingdom without a clear safety net.
Her defining opportunity came in 2015 with the adaptation of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. She played Vera Claythorne, the protagonist who carries the heaviest moral weight of the plot. The BBC miniseries drew more than six million viewers at its premiere in the United Kingdom.
From there, her face became a familiar sight in period dramas and psychological thrillers. In 2017 she appeared in the series SS-GB, and a year later in The Frankenstein Chronicles. Dermody prefers characters who keep secrets or move through moral gray areas. She avoids constant media exposure and unnecessary red carpets.
In 2019, she joined the cast of Carnival Row to play Portia Linane.
The year 2021 brought the release of The Beast Must Die, where she shared scenes with Jared Harris. She is an actress who carefully picks her screen time and chooses projects that let her keep a low profile away from the set. She splits her time between several countries depending on production needs.
In 2022 she shot Hilma under the direction of Lasse Hallström, a biographical film about the artist Hilma af Klint.
Dermody avoids popularity algorithms.
In 2024, she took part in the suspense series Nightsleeper for the BBC, a story set on a hijacked train. She was also part of the cast of The Way of the Wind, Terrence Malick's project that began production years earlier. Malick's editing process is often unpredictable, and her role was kept under strict confidentiality throughout the process.
The production of The Way of the Wind went through several years of post-production due to the working method of the Texan director.
