Patrick Brammall was born in 1976 with Prune Belly syndrome. Doctors in Canberra were pessimistic and gave him little chance of surviving his first months of life. But the boy survived several surgeries and went on to graduate from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2004.
His first professional steps had nothing glamorous about them. He worked on low-budget Australian series such as The Alice during 2005. On those shoots he learned that comic timing is a matter of millimeters, not grand gestures.
And the quiet effort paid off.
In 2012, he landed the role of Sean Moody in the comedy A Moody Christmas. That performance earned him the AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Comedy and changed how the industry saw him. He stopped being a reliable supporting actor and became a name capable of carrying a production on his shoulders.
The year 2015 was the definitive turning point, thanks to No Activity. Brammall not only starred in the series but also took an active part in creating it for the Stan streaming platform. The plot was basically two police officers sitting in a car, waiting while nothing relevant happened.
The bet on absurd dialogue and absolute inaction was a massive hit in Australia. So much so that Will Ferrell saw the format and produced an American adaptation in 2017. Patrick Brammall was the only actor from the original cast who reprised his role in the American version for CBS All Access.
The American industry wasn't slow to call.
After moving to Los Angeles, he took on projects with very different profiles. In 2019, he joined the cast of Evil as Andy Bouchard. That role let him explore a dry, dramatic register that was far from the quick jokes of his early days in Melbourne.
While filming the comedy No Activity, he met actress Harriet Dyer. They married in March 2021 in a ceremony organized in just five days. That personal bond quickly became one of the most profitable creative partnerships in Australian television.
In 2022, Colin from Accounts premiered. The couple wrote and starred in this story about two strangers who come together after running over a dog. The series steered clear of the clichés of traditional romantic comedies to focus on human imperfection and pathos.
They wrote the scripts while raising their newly adopted daughter.
International critics praised the couple's real-life chemistry, and the series was sold to highly competitive markets such as the UK and the US. In 2023, the production swept the Logie Awards, taking home the prizes for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Comedy Series.
In 2024, the second season of the show moved its entire shoot to Sydney. This technical decision allowed production company Easy Tiger to access the New South Wales government tax incentives to reduce post-production costs.
