Oscar Nunez was born in Cuba in 1958 and moved to the United States at just four years old. Before stepping onto a television set, he earned a living as a certified dental technician. He studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons but ended up making dentures in his father's business for years.
Comedy was not his first career choice. He began exploring improv in New York with the group Shock of the Funny before moving to the West Coast. In the late nineties, he joined the prestigious comedy troupe The Groundlings. There he refined an acting style built on restraint and the use of silence as a comedic punchline.
The industry doesn't always know what to do with an actor who doesn't yell.
In 1998, he landed a small role in Curb Your Enthusiasm as a parking attendant. It was a brief appearance, but it was enough for casting directors to notice his ability to keep a straight face amid chaos. His big break, however, didn't come until he was past forty.
In 2005, he signed a contract for the American version of The Office. He played Oscar Martinez for nine seasons and 189 episodes. His character was one of the few Dunder Mifflin employees with functional common sense. He was the first openly gay Latino lead in a prime-time American sitcom.
His character wasn't the center of the jokes.
Nunez decided to play the accountant in a flat, rational way. That choice is what made the character work so well against the theatrics of Steve Carell. In 2006, the cast won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. The show became a comfort for audiences and still generates millions of viewing hours on streaming platforms today.
But television success didn't pull him away from film. In 2009, he appeared in the movie The Proposal alongside Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. He played Ramone, a waiter, stripper and wedding officiant in a small town in Alaska. The contrast between his usual seriousness and the absurdity of the role showed that his range was broader than many believed.
After the series ended in 2013, he focused on supporting roles in big-budget projects. In 2017, he appeared in the big-screen adaptation of Baywatch, and in 2022 he worked alongside Sandra Bullock again in The Lost City. His appearances are often brief but effective, because he has a sharp command of physical comedy timing without needing big gestures.
Office humor changed forever.
In 2022, he appeared in the Disney sequel Disenchanted, playing Edgar. He has also built a steady career as a voice actor in animated series such as The Great North and Firebuds. His voice has a dry, authoritative tone that fits bureaucratic characters or weary authority figures perfectly.
In 2023, he joined the cast of the series Lucky Hank alongside Bob Odenkirk, playing Dean Jacob Rose. The show was filmed in Vancouver and explored existential crises in an academic setting. The series was canceled after just one season by AMC due to low linear ratings. In 2024, the actor continued working on voice-over projects and small TV appearances while managing his own schedule without aggressive publicists.
