The Weight of a Steel Needle

In 2009, Maisie Williams walked into an audition room without knowing she would spend the next decade holding a sword. She was twelve years old and had no prior professional filming experience. The series Game of Thrones chose her from among hundreds of candidates to play Arya Stark, and her contract kept her tied to the HBO production until 2019.

Filming in the icy locations of Northern Ireland shaped her teenage years in a strange way. While her friends went to school, she was learning to fight with her left hand to stay true to the character's nature in George R.R. Martin's books. That physical discipline ended up being her best acting school.

Global fame arrived before she came of age.

During the years the series aired, Williams had to manage public exposure that affected her body image. But her work did not stop within the walls of Winterfell. In 2014 she starred in The Falling, where critics began to see that there was life beyond the television phenomenon. It was a story of mass fainting and repression that earned her the award for British Rising Star at the London Critics Circle Film Awards.

The Lean Years and New Looks

After the series ended in 2019, many expected Williams to jump straight into Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. Reality was different. The release of The New Mutants in 2020 suffered constant delays and a cold reception from audiences. It was a necessary pause to step away from the spotlight and redefine what she wanted to show on screen.

In 2017 she founded Daisy Chain Productions with Dom Santry and Bill Milner. The goal was not only to produce films but to build a network of contacts for young creatives. They wanted to break down the barriers to entry in an industry that often feels closed off to those without famous last names.

Money wasn't everything.

In 2022, Williams shaved her head and bleached her eyebrows to become Jordan in the miniseries Pistol. Under the direction of Danny Boyle, she played the woman who became the face of the punk movement in London. She appeared on screen in sheer PVC outfits with a defiant attitude that definitively moved her away from the image of the warrior girl that audiences had etched in their minds.

Fashion as Armor

Williams found in avant-garde fashion a form of expression that film sometimes denied her. Instead of dressing conventionally for red carpets, she chose disruptive aesthetics and collaborations with brands that play with gender identity. As a result, her presence at the Paris and Milan fashion weeks became as common as her television appearances.

In 2024, her physical transformation was complete.

To play Catherine Dior in the series The New Look, she had to film scenes depicting the designer's sister's ordeal in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. It was a role that demanded extreme fragility and a silent performance that Williams had not explored until then. The production focused on the Nazi occupation of Paris and the birth of haute couture amid misery.

In 2024, the production of The New Look confirmed that Williams lost about twenty-five pounds under medical supervision to film the captivity scenes. It was an immersive process that included 14-hour workdays on sets recreating the conditions of French prisons in the 1940s.
