Paul Reiser was born in New York in 1956 and honed his craft in comedy clubs before movies knew what to do with his half smile. His first big break came in 1982 with Diner. Barry Levinson let him improvise for hours, and that fast, almost rushed style of speaking was born there, one that would define his career for decades.
Then came 1986.
James Cameron cast him in Aliens because he needed someone who seemed trustworthy but would be capable of selling out his own mother for a promotion. He played Carter Burke with a mix of cowardice and ambition that still draws insults at science fiction conventions today. That performance earned him a reputation as a corporate villain that almost overshadows his work as a comedian.
In 1992, Mad About You premiered. The series ran for seven initial seasons and made Reiser one of the wealthiest men on American television. He wasn't the funniest or the most handsome on the lineup. But he connected with an audience that saw itself reflected in his everyday squabbles about the dishwasher or sharing an apartment in Manhattan.
He earned a million dollars per episode during the final stretch of the original series.
After the comedy ended in 1999, the actor spent years focused on writing and on a family life away from the spotlight. He turned down projects that only aimed to repeat the formula of the harried husband. And the gamble paid off. His return to prestige film didn't come from persistence but from an acting maturity few had expected of him.
The turning point came in 2014. In the film Whiplash, he played the lead character's father (a brief but essential role) to balance out the psychological violence of Professor Fletcher. Reiser brought a warmth that gave viewers a refuge amid all the rhythmic chaos.
And it worked.
From then on, his schedule filled with projects that made the most of his gray hair and laid-back tone. In 2017, he joined the cast of Stranger Things, playing Dr. Sam Owens. The show's creators wanted to play with the ambiguity Reiser had already explored in the 1980s. In 2021, he appeared in The Kominsky Method, proving his comedic rhythm was still intact alongside legends such as Michael Douglas.
In 2024, he returned to his role as Jeffrey in the fourth installment of Beverly Hills Cop for Netflix. The production had an estimated budget of $150 million and marked his professional reunion with Eddie Murphy after nearly four decades apart. In 2023, he produced and starred in the comedy The Problem with People, shot entirely in Ireland with private equity investment.
