Margaret Qualley stopped dancing at sixteen because she wasn't chasing technical perfection but something grittier. She trained eight hours a day at American Ballet Theatre, but decided that the rigidity of the stage didn't fit her way of understanding the body. She gave up pointe shoes for modeling in New York and, shortly after, for acting in London.
Her real debut came in 2013 with a minor role in Gia Coppola's Palo Alto. At the time, few knew she was the daughter of Andie MacDowell, because she preferred to introduce herself at auditions using her middle name. The genetics were obvious, but her energy on screen was far more nervous and electric than her mother's.
She gave up everything for acting.
In 2014 she moved to the suburbs of a strange fiction called The Leftovers. For three seasons she played Jill Garvey and learned to handle silence there. The HBO series wasn't chasing mass audiences, but it helped casting directors take note of a name that moved differently from the rest.
The whole world took notice of her when, in 2019, she got into Brad Pitt's car. In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, she played Pussycat, and Quentin Tarantino drew on her background as a dancer to shoot scenes where movement was the script. That car scene defined her ability to be magnetic and menacing at the same time.
That same year, she earned her first Emmy nomination for Fosse/Verdon. Playing Ann Reinking allowed her to come full circle with dance and prove she could carry the weight of a complex biographical production. But Qualley didn't want to be the flavor of the month on the red carpets of Los Angeles.
She moved on to rougher projects.
In 2021 she starred in Netflix's Maid, and the series became a global viewing phenomenon. She filmed alongside her real mother a story about extreme poverty and psychological abuse in the United States. She accepted a salary below the platform's big stars to make sure the production's tone was right.
Her relationship with director Yorgos Lanthimos began to take shape in 2022. In 2023, she appeared in Poor Things in a supporting role that was nonetheless key to understanding the protagonist's sexual awakening. Qualley sees film as a space where comfort is the main enemy, which is why she chooses scripts that demand total physical commitment.
In 2024, she reunited with the Greek director for Kinds of Kindness, where she played three different characters. International critics praised her ability to move from dark comedy to dry drama without barely changing her expression. But her big bet that year was another, much more polarizing film.
The extreme risk came with The Substance.
Directed by Coralie Fargeat in 2024, she faced an extreme body horror shoot alongside Demi Moore. The film required months of physical preparation and long sessions of prosthetic makeup for the movie's final scenes. The production cost 17 million dollars and was shot almost entirely in studios in France to avoid leaks to the American press.
In August 2023 she married music producer Jack Antonoff in a private ceremony in New Jersey. The guest list included Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey, but she banned professional photographers from the venue. The total private security budget for the event exceeded two hundred thousand dollars.
