Maria Menounos

The daughter of Greek immigrants raised in Massachusetts, Maria Menounos cleaned movie theaters in Boston before learning to stand in front of a camera. Her first major news training ground was not the red carpets of Los Angeles but the high school classrooms of Channel One News, where she covered earthquakes in El Salvador and health crises in South Africa.

That grassroots training built an unusually resilient professional drive in the entertainment industry.

In 2002, she made her big break in the national networks when she joined Entertainment Tonight. She was twenty-four years old and became the youngest reporter in the show's history, covering movie premieres while also appearing on hard news programs such as Today and NBC Nightly News.

And it worked flawlessly.

The Leap to Scripted TV and the Ring

Mainstream television placed her in prime-time news, but Menounos sought a place in American scripted drama. In 2004, she landed a recurring role on the teen series One Tree Hill, playing Jules across ten episodes. A year later, in 2005, she had a brief appearance in the blockbuster Fantastic Four starring Tim Story.

Hollywood demanded a choice between studio journalism and acting, but she broke the media exclusivity rule by balancing current affairs reporting for NBC with film contracts.

She also explored physical entertainment. She debuted in the WWE ring in 2009 and went on to compete at WrestleMania XXVIII in 2012, teaming up with Kelly Kelly in front of more than seventy thousand fans in Miami.

That same year, she reached the final of the dance competition Dancing with the Stars, solidifying her versatile profile on broadcast television.

The Podcast Factory and Independent Production

Together with her partner Keven Undergaro, she founded AfterBuzz TV, a digital network focused on post-broadcast analysis of TV series. The project started with minimal home resources and went on to generate more than a billion annual downloads, serving as a launching pad for dozens of new hosts in California.

Not everything was record-breaking numbers.

Her independent comedy feature Adventures of Serial Buddies, released in 2011 and produced with Undergaro, barely secured theatrical distribution after a lukewarm critical reception. The financial setback brought her back to daily news sets, where she hosted Extra and later anchored E! News between 2015 and 2017.

In 2023, she hosted the televised Miss Universe pageant from El Salvador. That same year, she closed the sale of AfterBuzz's audio catalog to larger distribution networks, focusing her work on executive producing health programs such as Heal Squad and keeping her brand ambassador contract with WWE Network.
