Mark Metcalf was born in Findlay, Ohio, on 1946. His face got stuck in the minds of half the world when, in 1978, he played Doug Neidermeyer in Animal House. That tyrannical sergeant almost accidentally defined his professional future.
No one screamed like him.
The success of John Landis's film stuck a label on him that was hard to shake. Casting directors wanted Metcalf to play rigid authority figures and characters you just wanted to slap. But he came from the New York theater and knew that film was a game of endurance.
In 1984, Twisted Sister's music gave him a second life in the media. He appeared in the videos for We're Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock, capturing the essence of Neidermeyer. Those screaming shouts into the camera earned him global visibility that art-house cinema had never allowed him to reach until then.
Then television came along.
He played The Master in Seinfeld during 1995 and 1996. It was one of the few times his comedic talent shone without the need for military uniforms. Shortly after, in 1997, he took on the role of The Master in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They were two characters with the same name but opposite natures.
In 2000 he decided to move to Montana. He was looking for a quieter life away from the spotlight of Los Angeles, and there he opened a restaurant called Libana. But he never fully stopped acting.
It was a risky business.
In the following decades, he alternated running his business with roles in independent film. In 2011 he took part in Fort McCoy, and in 2021 he shot The Last Victim. These productions steer clear of the noise of big franchises to focus on characters of few words.
In 2022, he worked on A Place in the Field under the direction of Nikki Schuster. The shoot took place in rural locations and the budget was tight. Metcalf played a character who reflected the passage of time with a restraint few expected from that shouting young man of the 1970s.
The film was shot entirely in 4K digital format with a crew of fewer than twenty people.
