Matthew Lawrence is not just the middle brother of a dynasty of teen idols. In 1993, he sat down at the table with Robin Williams, and that experience shaped his understanding of the film set. He was thirteen when he played Chris Hillard in Mrs. Doubtfire.
That shoot marked his first real encounter with the machinery of the major Hollywood studios. But his training had begun much earlier on the series Gimme a Break! during the 1980s. Television was his true acting school.
The industry packaged them as one indivisible product.
Alongside his brothers Joey and Andrew, he starred in Brotherly Love between 1995 and 1997. The sitcom leaned on the real chemistry between them to build an effective, wholesome comedy. Matthew brought a calmer presence compared with the overwhelming energy of his older brother.
In 1997, he joined the cast of Boy Meets World to play Jack Hunter. It was his period of greatest media exposure. The series stayed on the air until 2000, and his face covered thousands of school folders across the United States and Europe.
And typecasting soon followed.
In 2002, he tried to break free of that image with the comedy The Hot Chick. In this production, he shared the screen with Rob Schneider and Anna Faris. The film performed well at the box office, with worldwide earnings of over 54 million dollars. But critics overlooked his acting and focused instead on the physical humor of the plot.
In the following years, he alternated independent films with smaller productions for the domestic market. In 2011, he worked on Fort McCoy, and in 2013 he took part in the horror film The Midnight Game. He wasn't after the spotlight but rather a steady pace of work.
In 2015, he revived his role as Jack Hunter for an episode of Girl Meets World. It was a strategic move to connect with the nostalgic audience of 1990s Disney. The reunion with his former co-stars generated a traffic spike on social media that August.
Because the business changed, and he knew how to read the times.
In 2023, he launched the Brotherly Love Podcast with his brothers. In this space, they look back on their careers and demystify how harsh it is to be a child star in a hostile environment. The show is recorded weekly in a studio in Los Angeles.
His personal life also made headlines after his divorce from dancer Cheryl Burke in 2022. Shortly afterward, he began a relationship with singer Rozonda Thomas of the group TLC. In 2024, he shot the film Of Mind and Music under director Richie Greer.
