Megan Park spent six seasons playing a Christian teenager on American television before realizing her place was behind the camera. During those years on the set of The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008-2013), the Canadian actress soaked up countless hours of technical know-how while audiences typecast her in a textbook supporting role. Her ambition, however, was not to keep building a career in front of the camera in interchangeable romantic comedies.
In 2017, she made the leap into directing with the short film Lucy in My Eyes, which won at the Austin Film Festival. That was when Park began developing a personal style, far removed from the usual Hollywood tricks. And the industry stopped seeing her as a supporting actress.
Her gaze is generational.
Unlike other filmmakers who try to dissect youth through nostalgia or judgment, Park opts for a camera that breathes with its characters. In 2021, she wrote and directed The Fallout, a film that addresses the aftermath of a school shooting without showing a single ounce of explicit violence. The movie won the Grand Jury Prize at the SXSW Festival and gave the director a privileged position within American independent cinema.
While shooting her feature debut, Park banned excessive makeup and insisted that the dialogue match the way Gen Z teens actually talk. For her, authenticity isn't an aesthetic choice but a narrative necessity. So she worked hand in hand with Jenna Ortega to build a character who processes trauma through silence and digital isolation.
The success of this production didn't rely on big marketing campaigns. It was the raw honesty of the script that helped the film find a place on streaming platforms in a year when moviegoing habits were changing. Park showed that you can tackle systemic issues from the intimacy of a messy bedroom.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, the director returned to the festival circuit with My Old Ass, a sci-fi-tinged comedy produced by Margot Robbie's company. In the story, an 18-year-old girl receives advice from her future self, played by Aubrey Plaza, during a mushroom trip in a rural setting. The film steers clear of cheap morals and focuses instead on the inevitability of time passing and irreversible decisions.
Park often writes her own screenplays during periods of total isolation to preserve the purity of the voices she imagines. On her sets, there is a technical calm that contrasts with the emotional intensity of her stories. But Park doesn't see herself as a niche author. Her goal is for mainstream cinema to recover the humanity it has lost amid so many visual effects and endless franchises.
For her, film is a tool for documenting society. Instead of chasing the perfect shot, she prefers her performers' spontaneous reactions. So she tends to shoot few takes to keep the material from feeling rehearsed or artificial.
My Old Ass was acquired by Amazon MGM Studios for close to 15 million dollars after its run at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024. Filming for the feature wrapped in just under a month across various locations in Ontario.
