Vera Mindy Chokalingam didn't enter the industry asking for permission or waiting for the phone to ring. In 2002, she put on a thrift-store wig and showed up at a tiny New York theater to play Ben Affleck.
That alternative comedy titled Matt & Ben, co-written with her college classmate Brenda Withers, was not only a biting satire about the authorship of the script for Good Will Hunting. It was also her ticket into the Los Angeles offices where executives were starting to look for different voices.
And the gamble paid off.
At twenty-four, she joined the first season of The Office as a writing intern after catching Greg Daniels' attention. She was the only woman and the only person of color on a staff of eight writers dominated by male Harvard graduates.
But Kaling didn't just occupy a chair to fill a corporate quota. Over the show's nine seasons, she ended up writing twenty-four episodes, more than any of her fellow writers at the table.
In front of the camera, she brought Kelly Kapoor to life, a role originally designed as a minor element that ended up stealing scenes thanks to a mix of pop narcissism and rapid-fire dialogue. In 2010, the Television Academy nominated her for an Emmy for writing Niagara, the centerpiece episode where the show's two leads get married.
So the next step was inevitable: taking full control of her own writers' room.
In 2012, Fox greenlit The Mindy Project. The series centered on an obstetrician obsessed with 1990s romantic comedies, a selfish, deeply flawed character who blew up the usual mold reserved for actresses of Indian descent on American television.
When Fox canceled the show after three seasons due to declining linear ratings, Kaling struck a deal with Hulu in 2015 to produce three additional seasons. It was a pioneering survival move in the video-on-demand space that anticipated the mass migration of scripted series to subscription platforms.
Nobody gave her the office.
Because her production company, Kaling International, founded in 2012, wasted no time developing projects in parallel for different buyers. In 2020, she premiered the teen series Never Have I Ever on Netflix alongside Lang Fisher, a title that drew forty million viewers in its first twenty-eight days and ran for four seasons.
In 2021, she sold The Sex Lives of College Girls to Max. The project confirmed her formula: ensemble casts of young people, rapid-fire dialogue bordering on verbal overdrive, and ambitious female leads who never apologize for their ethical slip-ups.
Her relationship with movie theaters reflects that same struggle for control of the narrative. At the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, Amazon Studios paid thirteen million dollars for the distribution rights to Late Night, a comedy she wrote and co-starred in alongside Emma Thompson, although its international box office barely topped twenty-two million dollars.
Her most notable stumble came in 2023 with the premiere of Velma on Max. The adult animated series met with a crushing reception from both critics and user rating platforms, where it was the target of mass campaigns of one-star reviews. The platform aired a second season in 2024 before permanently freezing production on new episodes.
In 2025, she returned to the workplace comedy format with Running Point, a sports series for Netflix starring Kate Hudson as the executive ranks of a professional basketball team. The company renewed the project for a second season in 2026 and approved a third, with an average budget of fifty million dollars per season.

Things you probably didn't know about Mindy Kaling
I think there’s been a tendency for people to conflate my characters with my personality. … I wrote 24 episodes of The Office. That’s more than any other person on The Office, but no one can really picture me sitting and doing the hard work of writing the episodes.
I simply regard romantic comedies as a subgenre of sci-fi, in which the world created therein has different rules than my regular human world. …. There is no difference between Ripley from Alien and any Katherine Heigl character.
I'm going to gently assume that if you're reading this book, you are a little bit of a nerd, or perhaps you're a man whose nerd girlfriend is taking a long time in the bathroom and you can't figure out how to turn on her television.
