Morgan Lily started working before she had her permanent teeth. It wasn't her decision (obviously), but that momentum led her to film commercials for Disney and Kellogg's before she turned six. By 2005, she was already in front of television cameras on the series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
Her entry into mainstream movies came in 2009 with He’s Just Not That Into You. But it was the digital disaster of Roland Emmerich that put her face on movie marquees around the world.
In 2012, she played the daughter of John Cusack.
That production cost $200 million and grossed nearly 800 worldwide. For a nine-year-old girl, it meant months surrounded by green screens and earthquake simulators. It was her baptism by fire in Hollywood's heavy-duty film industry.
Rob Reiner cast her in 2010 for Flipped. It was a small, almost handcrafted film that stayed far from the noise of special effects. Lily proved there that she could carry a close-up without needing the world to end behind her.
That change of pace paved the way for what came next.
In 2011, she landed the role of young Raven in X-Men: First Class. She had to share the celebrity role with Jennifer Lawrence (who played the adult version) and endure makeup sessions lasting several hours. The process was tedious because the blue prosthetics limited her facial movement.
The film earned $353 million at the global box office.
The shift from child star to adult actress is often a minefield in California. Lily chose to step away from the radar of big blockbusters to pursue projects with more edge. Between 2014 and 2016, she appeared in the series Shameless, playing Bonnie.
It was a gritty role, far from the polished image of her early career. This Showtime series had no room for the squeaky-clean faces of Disney. Her portrayal of a girl who lived in a van with her large family broke with her previous image.
The industry saw her differently.
In 2020 she filmed Joe Bell alongside Mark Wahlberg. In this film based on a true story, she stepped into the role of Marla, and critics highlighted her ability to carry rural drama. Filming took place on locations in Utah under fairly harsh weather conditions.
Netflix's horror trilogy brought her back to the mainstream in 2021. In Fear Street Part Two: 1978, she played Cindy Berman in a setting that paid tribute to the classic 1970s slasher. Filming in Georgia lasted several months and demanded serious physical effort for the chase scenes in the woods.
But Lily hasn't limited herself to acting in front of the camera. In recent years, she has become interested in photography and directing (topics she often shares on social media without much fanfare). It's clear she has been on sets since she was old enough to remember.
In 2024, her name remained tied to independent projects that prioritize the script over the budget. Her salary on big Marvel productions was managed through trust funds because she was a minor at the time.
The X-Men contract specified that minors' filming days could not exceed five effective hours.
