The Face That Stopped Japan

Nanako Matsushima never had to scream to make audiences feel terror. In 1998, she stepped in front of Hideo Nakata's camera to star in The Ring, and her terrified gaze in front of a glowing television set went around the world. That film changed the rules of Asian horror cinema, but she already had plans that went beyond being a victim on screen.

Before becoming the visible face of J-Horror, she worked as an advertising model for cosmetics brands. Her move into acting was no accident of casting. In 1996, she landed the lead role in the NHK morning drama Himawari after beating more than two thousand hopefuls in auditions.

Japanese television came to a standstill for her.

Her ability to draw massive audiences was confirmed with GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka in 1998. There, she played Azusa Fuyutsuki and met Takashi Sorimachi. The chemistry between them went beyond the script, and they ended up marrying in 2001 in an event that local media treated as a matter of state.

But Matsushima never let her private life take over her career. She chose her roles with almost surgical precision to avoid being typecast in lightweight romantic comedies. And the move paid off.

The Weight of Sovereign Ratings

In 2000, she starred in Yamato Nadeshiko, and the ratings came close to 35%. Her character, a woman obsessed with money and social status, broke away from the sweet heroine image audiences expected from her. It was a risky bet that made her the best-paid actress of her generation.

After a quieter period devoted to caring for her family, she returned with a force few analysts had predicted. In 2011, she took the lead role in Kaseifu no Mita. She played a robotic housekeeper, incapable of smiling and willing to carry out any order, even the most sinister ones.

The final episode of that series reached a 40% audience share in Japan.

The risk was obvious.

Playing a character devoid of emotion for eleven episodes could have alienated her fans. Instead, Mita's coldness became a social phenomenon that sparked debates about the modern family structure. Matsushima proved she could carry an entire production without relying on the usual dramatic acting tricks.

Maturity in the Spotlight

Over the years, her presence on set became more selective. In 2019, she joined the drama Natsuzora in a supporting role of great emotional weight that helped guide the new generation of actors. She no longer sought absolute center stage, but her name still guaranteed the financial viability of projects.

In 2023, she accepted a role in the series Ousama ni Sasagu Kusuriyubi, playing a controlling and elegant mother. Her command of the stage in this TBS production made it clear that her technique had been refined toward minimalism. Fewer movements and more intention in every word spoken.

And her return to her roots came soon after.

In 2024, she reunited on screen with her husband for the special GTO Revival, reprising her role as Azusa Fuyutsuki after more than two decades away. Anticipation to see them together again sent searches on digital platforms soaring weeks before the broadcast. It was a nostalgic move that worked because both kept their performances restrained.

Despite international offers that came after the impact of her first works, she always preferred to work in her native language. In 2024, filming of her final scenes for television was carried out under strict privacy measures to prevent script leaks to the sensationalist Japanese press.
