Norman Reedus had no intention of becoming an actor when he arrived in Los Angeles. He worked at a motorcycle shop in Venice Beach for a miserable wage and sold paintings sporadically to try to pay the bills. One day he got drunk at a party in the Hollywood Hills, put on a show shouting while wearing giant sunglasses, and someone decided that this guy with a grim face had a future in front of a camera.
He took the first role because he needed the money for rent.
In 1997, he made his film debut in Mimic under the direction of Guillermo del Toro. It was a brief appearance, but it helped the industry notice that tough-guy gaze that always seems to have seen it all. He wasn't the polished pretty boy agencies were looking for in the nineties, and that very rough edge opened the doors of independent film for him.
His real breakthrough came in 1999 with The Boondock Saints. The film was an outright box office flop in the United States but became a massive cult favorite in video rental stores around the world. Reedus played Murphy MacManus, and that's where his fascination with characters who live on the fringes of the law and don't need to talk much to command respect began.
But his life truly changed in 2010.
He auditioned for the role of Merle Dixon in The Walking Dead and was turned down. However, the producers were so impressed by his energy that they created a character specifically for him that didn't even exist in the original comics. Daryl Dixon was supposed to die in the first episodes, but audiences immediately connected with his crossbow and his leather vest. In the end he stayed on to lead the cast for eleven seasons of the most-watched series on cable television.
Reedus has never hidden that he prefers the smell of gasoline to the red carpets of film festivals. In 2016, he premiered Ride with Norman Reedus, touring back roads with his friends and showing a rawer side of motorcycle culture. It's a format that works because there is no script or big production tricks behind it.
And the video game world came knocking at his door too.
In 2019, he starred in Death Stranding under Japanese creator Hideo Kojima. The project was a risky bet that required the actor to spend weeks in a motion-capture suit to play Sam Porter Bridges. In 2024, it was confirmed that the sequel was already well into development to deepen that social sci-fi universe.
In 2023, he moved to France to shoot the first volume of the series focused exclusively on his character in the zombie franchise. Filming in Europe gave the story a different feel and allowed the actor to explore a more mature performance far from the forests of Georgia. For 2024, he took part in The Bikeriders alongside Austin Butler and Tom Hardy, where he plays a veteran biker named Funny Sonny.
He is also set for the release of Ballerina in 2025, as part of the expansion of the John Wick action universe. Reedus has managed his wealth well by investing in restaurants and in his own photography book publishing house, Big Bald Gallery. In 2022, he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located very close to George A. Romero's.
His production company Bigbaldhead signed an exclusive deal with the AMC network in 2020 to develop original content.
