Lauren Cohan was born in New Jersey, but her identity was shaped in Surrey, England. At age thirteen she crossed the Atlantic to settle in the United Kingdom, and that move shaped her accent and her approach to work. She studied Drama and English Literature at the University of Winchester while touring local theaters with a company she helped found.
Theater was her first real school.
Her film debut came in 2005 with Casanova. She shared the set with Heath Ledger, which taught her that Hollywood doesn't wait for anyone. But her early years were a string of supporting roles in comedies that never fully showcased her dramatic range.
In 2007, she played Bela Talbot in Supernatural and discovered the power of fan communities. Fans of the show didn't welcome her at first, because her character stole the spotlight from the Winchester brothers. It was an early lesson in the passion of global audiences and in the need to build characters with hidden layers.
In 2011, she joined the cast of The Walking Dead during its second season. The role of Maggie Greene started out as a supporting part in a rural setting and became the emotional center of a multimillion-dollar franchise. Cohan shot more than one hundred episodes of the main series before looking for new horizons in action comedy.
In 2019, she tried to break away from post-apocalyptic drama by starring in Whiskey Cavalier. The series blended espionage and humor, but ABC decided to cancel it after just one season due to its ratings. That professional setback led to her return to the world of the living dead a year later.
Her superhero film career was brief but symbolic. In 2016, she played Martha Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice under the direction of Zack Snyder. She appeared on screen for only a few minutes during the alley sequence, but her face became tied to one of the most analyzed moments in the genre's history.
And then came executive producing.
With the release of The Walking Dead: Dead City in 2023, she took on a role that went beyond acting. She got involved in the creative decisions and executive producing to ensure Maggie's evolution remained consistent. Filming in New Jersey was a physical return to her roots while she managed cable television budgets.
Off camera, she keeps a low profile and avoids overexposure on social media. She prefers to focus on voice work, such as her role in the video game Destiny or the animated series Invincible in 2021. Her contract for the second season of Dead City was signed on terms that guaranteed her a say in how the scripts were developed.
Filming for the new season of episodes in 2024 established its base of operations at the New Jersey studios, with a technical crew of more than two hundred people.
