Olympia Dukakis was not a typical movie star. She picked up her Oscar for Moonstruck when she was already 56 years old. Before that moment, her life revolved around backstage work and acting classes in New Jersey.
Her parents emigrated from Greece to Massachusetts in search of a better life. She earned a degree in physical therapy and worked helping polio patients, but the lure of the stage proved stronger. So she decided to study drama at Boston University.
The wait was a long one.
In 1971, she and her husband Louis Zorich founded the Whole Theater Company in Montclair. They ran the space for nineteen years because they preferred creative freedom to Hollywood money. It was never a profitable business, and they often struggled to pay the bills.
But that technical discipline prepared her for what came next. In 1987, Norman Jewison offered her the role of Rose Castorini. That sarcastic, clear-eyed mother earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1988.
She won by a landslide.
After the award came titles like Steel Magnolias in 1989. There she shared the screen with Shirley MacLaine and proved that her comedic talent was unbeatable. Then came the Look Who's Talking franchise, which brought her massive commercial visibility with young audiences.
In 1993, she accepted the role of Anna Madrigal in the miniseries Tales of the City. Playing a trans woman at that time was a professional risk that few names of her stature were willing to take. She did it without hesitation because she saw art as a social commitment.
Because she never cared what major studio executives thought. She kept working on independent productions and returning to the theater whenever she could. In 2011, she appeared in Cloudburst, playing a lesbian who escapes from a nursing home.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2018, she appeared in the Netflix revival of Tales of the City, reprising her most beloved role. Her last credited film appearance was in Not to Forget, shot in 2021. She died at her New York home on May 1, 2021 at age 89 after a period of fragile health.
Her husband, Louis Zorich, had died three years earlier in 2018.
