Penn Badgley landed his first paychecks in the industry by voicing supporting characters in Nintendo video games in the late nineties. He was twelve, lived in Seattle, and had no idea that television would eventually shape his face for two generations of viewers.
Then came Los Angeles. In 2000 he landed minor appearances in sitcoms and a recurring role on the soap The Young and the Restless. These were times of grueling auditions and routine rejections in dreary casting offices.
Nobody predicted a mass phenomenon.
In 2007 the CW network sent him the script for Gossip Girl. Badgley turned down the role of Dan Humphrey twice because he didn't want to tie himself to a teen drama, but producer Stephanie Savage kept pushing until she convinced him.
That production, shot on the expensive sidewalks of Manhattan, upended his routine overnight. Over six seasons and 121 episodes, the actor lent his signature half-smile to a character who looked down on New York's elite while doing everything possible to belong to it.
And the shoot ended up devouring the cast's privacy. The gossip press followed his every move through the New York subway.
But Badgley used the soap's summer breaks to break into film. In 2010, he shared the screen with Emma Stone in Easy A, a teen comedy that earned ten times its initial budget.
A year later came Margin Call (2011), a financial drama directed by J.C. Chandor in which he shared the screen with Kevin Spacey and Jeremy Irons. In that film he played Seth Bregman, a junior analyst who ran million-dollar numbers while watching the global banking system collapse.
When Gossip Girl wrapped up in 2012, the phone stopped ringing with the same urgency. Badgley formed an indie pop band called MOTHXR, rented vans to tour tiny venues across Europe, and recorded the album Centerfold in cheap hotel rooms in 2016.
Music paid the emotional bills, but it didn't sustain a career in California's studios.
Then the psychotic bookstore owner showed up.
In 2018, Lifetime premiered You, an adaptation of Caroline Kepnes's novel that quietly aired on traditional cable TV. The network decided not to fund it after a first batch with low ratings.
But Netflix bought the distribution rights, and the audience exploded worldwide. More than 40 million accounts devoured the first season in its first four weeks in the catalog.
Badgley built Joe Goldberg with a meticulously calculated coldness. He stripped away any friendly gestures, toned down his blinking in the stalking scenes, and used voiceover to expose the hypocrisy of traditional romantic speeches.
In 2023 the actor insisted on minimizing physical intimacy scenes on screen to protect his ethical commitment to his family life. Screenwriter Sera Gamble accepted the request and rewrote the storylines of the fourth season without losing the suspense.
In 2022 he co-founded the podcast Podcrushed with two partners, focused on the heartbreak and awkwardness of early adolescence. The project served as a platform to dismantle the solemn image studios build around dramatic actors.
So he began juggling audio recordings in Brooklyn with executive producing the final episodes of his flagship series.
In 2025, the fifth season of You wrapped up in New York, closing out a seven-year run at the streaming giant.
The final shoot demanded fourteen-hour days in urban locations on a tight budget that exceeded four million dollars per episode.

Things you probably didn't know about Penn Badgley
I think anybody who gets to that stage in reality is so beyond self-loathing. If you hate yourself, well, then you're going to turn some of that hatred on the world around you.
Honestly, for me, acting is just a very spiritual thing where I’m just present with the words I read on the screen, and when it’s awful and it kind of makes your skin crawl, then that’s what comes up and that’s what I do.
I will say that honestly, as an actor ... As a person, I intellectualize plenty before and after, right? But really, as an actor during, I don't need to apply that same intellectual process because, first of all, when you play a character for this long, you just kind of know... It's very intuitive.
I certainly had the great bounty of drawing on my own experience, becoming a new biological parent, and that was quite natural.
It doesn't matter who you are as an actor; that's really always in the script. It wouldn't make sense a lot of times to drastically change things. It would threaten to change the story arc and all that kind of stuff. I think really what an actor does is an instrument, not a player.
I think especially television is a conversation between the writer and the audience, and they're bringing all of their humanity to it. The actors are really just this conduit in the middle, who everybody kind of thinks of like the player, but no, we're really the instrument.
