Blake Lively submitted a passport photo at her first major audition because she didn't have a professional portfolio. Her older brother made her go to several auditions so she would stop wasting time during high school. In 2005 she landed a role in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and her career took off without her having planned it too much. But the real media buzz came a couple of years later with a project that typecast her as part of New York's elite.
Between 2007 and 2012, she played Serena van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl. That television series turned her face into a constant presence in fashion magazines and gossip sites. Fame came so suddenly that Lively had to learn to handle public scrutiny while filming grueling days on the streets of New York.
And the gamble paid off.
But the reality was that her contract tied her to an image she would struggle for years to shake off. During that time she looked for projects that broke away from the lifestyle of teen television. In 2010 Ben Affleck signed her for The Town. To win the role of a drug-addicted single mother in Boston, she had to fight against producers' prejudices who only saw a blonde cover girl in her. Lively showed up to the casting with no makeup and a local accent that left the crew speechless.
In 2011 she shot Green Lantern, which was a critical and box office disaster. That shoot changed her personal life as well as her view of the film business. She met Ryan Reynolds and decided she didn't want to work just to work. So she took a long break. She went almost three years without releasing anything significant, because she preferred to wait for scripts that would let her carry the weight of the story on her shoulders.
In 2015, she starred in The Age of Adaline. It was a production where she proved she could carry a romantic drama with a fantasy premise without relying on big visual effects. A year later came The Shallows. In this 2016 thriller, she spent most of the time alone in the water, facing a blue screen or on locations in Australia. The shoot was a physical ordeal that required her to perform nearly all of her risky scenes just a few months after giving birth to her second daughter.
No one on set doubted who was in charge.
Her ability to choose profitable projects was confirmed in 2018 with A Simple Favor. Directed by Paul Feig, she played a mysterious, cynical woman who wore three-piece suits. The film earned nearly 100 million dollars worldwide on a modest budget. By then, Lively was no longer just a fashionable actress. She had become a figure who understood exactly what audiences wanted to see in theaters.
Over the years, her interest shifted toward creative decision-making behind the camera. In 2024 she released It Ends With Us, where, in addition to acting, she was a very active executive producer. The film was based on a Colleen Hoover novel, and the postproduction process was surrounded by rumors of creative differences with director Justin Baldoni.
Lively took control of the final edit to make sure the story's vision was the one she felt was right for her audience. But the film's promotion in 2024 also sparked debate over the tone of its messaging on sensitive topics such as domestic violence. Despite criticism on social media, the numbers were undeniable. The film surpassed 340 million dollars in worldwide box office receipts against an initial budget of 25 million.
And the market once again proved her right.
In 2024, she also took part in filming the sequel to A Simple Favor at various locations in Italy. Her strategy is to alternate very specific commercial projects with building her own personal brand tied to beverage and lifestyle companies. Blake Lively manages her career with mathematical coolness that bypasses the industry's traditional awards circuit.
The marketing budget of her most recent big-budget production was fully recouped during its opening weekend in the United States.
