Phil Collins didn't get into music by accident. His mother was a talent agent, which gave him early access to the stage. In 1964 he appeared for a few seconds in the Beatles film A Hard Day’s Night, and nobody noticed that teenager in the crowd. But that experience on the film set gave him the stage skills he needed to manage his public image decades later.
His joining Genesis as a drummer in 1970 transformed the sound of progressive rock. When Peter Gabriel left the band in 1975, nobody thought the drummer could become the frontman. Collins took the microphone out of pure technical necessity and ended up turning a complex band into a machine for radio hits.
And the gamble paid off.
Throughout the 1980s, he was a constant presence on television and in film. In 1984, he composed the theme song for the film Against All Odds. The song was a massive hit that opened the doors of major Hollywood studios to him. Unlike many musicians of his generation, Collins understood the language of cinema and knew how to underscore a scene's emotion without overshadowing the screenplay.
In 1988, he starred in Buster as a charismatic thief. The film grossed 5.4 million dollars in the United States, but its real impact was felt on the sales charts. He sold more than five million copies of the soundtrack in just a few months and placed two songs at No. 1 worldwide at the same time.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
His role in the film Hook by Steven Spielberg in 1991 was almost a cameo. He played Inspector Good, a supporting part that went unnoticed by the general public. But for him, it meant working alongside the directors he had admired since his childhood in London. So he accepted the offer without hesitation, even though he was at the peak of his music career.
His collaboration with Disney on Tarzan in 1999 was his greatest technical challenge. He didn't just write the English lyrics. Collins spent months in the studio recording the Spanish, French, German and Italian versions so that his voice would sound the same in every market. He won the Oscar in 2000 after several unsuccessful nominations in the previous decade.
He repeated the formula in 2003 with Brother Bear. This time he worked with Mark Mancina to create a tribal atmosphere that moved away from the commercial pop of his solo albums. The production was costly and complex, but it helped cement his relationship with major animation studios during the first decade of the twenty-first century.
The industry wanted him everywhere.
In 2022, he closed his stage career with Genesis's farewell tour, titled The Last Domino?. A spinal injury affecting his nervous system forced him to remain seated throughout the entire show. His son Nicholas Collins handled the drums while Phil focused exclusively on vocals, with a voice worn down by time.
He owns one of the largest collections of Alamo battle artifacts in the world. In 2014, he donated thousands of historical pieces to the State of Texas for public display in a museum. The full collection was valued at more than $10 million by auction experts.
