Phil McGraw wasn't looking for the cameras when Oprah Winfrey hired him to win a trial in Texas in 1996. He was a psychologist turned legal strategist who analyzed jurors' body language for the firm Courtroom Sciences Inc. His direct, almost aggressive style convinced the queen of television to give him a weekly segment on her show.
And the audience responded immediately.
McGraw was born in Oklahoma in 1950 and grew up among oil fields and constant moves. He played college football on a scholarship at the University of Tulsa, but an injury pushed him firmly toward clinical psychology. After earning his doctorate at the University of North Texas, his career moved away from private practice and into the boardrooms of major corporations.
In 2002, he premiered his own show, titled Dr. Phil, under Winfrey's production company. The format moved away from the cheap sensationalism of the 1990s, offering a mix of self-help and psychological confrontation. It stayed on the air for 21 consecutive seasons and drew massive audiences.
But success didn't come without fierce criticism over the ethics of exposing mental health cases during prime time. McGraw always put spectacle ahead of conventional therapy in his on-camera interventions. His critics often pointed out that his quick advice oversimplified complex conditions to fit into forty-minute broadcast blocks.
He sold more than 30 million self-help books, while his son Jay McGraw took charge of expanding the empire through the production company Stage 29 Productions. This family business produced formats such as The Doctors and the scripted series Bull, loosely inspired by McGraw's years as a jury consultant before his rise to fame.
His daily show ended in May 2023 after thousands of episodes taped at Paramount's studios in Hollywood. McGraw decided it was time to regain full control of his image and his national distribution network.
In 2024, he opened Merit Street Media in Fort Worth, Texas.
It is a news and entertainment network broadcasting from a five-hectare complex with 4K technology, state of the art. The operations center features a circular studio designed to bring in a live audience and simultaneous satellite links with experts from across the country. His goal with this move was to centralize all of his production outside California's unions.
The initial investment to build this communications infrastructure exceeded 100 million dollars.
