Prashanth Thyagarajan made a big splash in Tamil Nadu cinema before he was old enough to vote.
His debut in 1990 with Vaigasi Poranthachu defied every expectation of local distributors. But it wasn't just a matter of luck or his famous surname. The young man mastered martial arts and piano with a discipline unusual for his age. His father, actor and director Thiagarajan, planned a career that avoided supporting roles in order to protect his son's image.
Prashanth was the face of a new generation.
During the first half of the 1990s, he delivered a string of commercial hits, including Thiruda Thiruda by Mani Ratnam. That 1993 film showcased a visual style that Indian cinema was not typically known for exporting. And audiences embraced this agile hero who didn't need stunt doubles for dangerous scenes. During this period, his name began to gain the same buzz as other rising stars who would go on to dominate the industry.
In 1998, director Shankar handed him the keys to Jeans. It was the most expensive production in Indian cinema up to that point, and it was shot in locations that included the seven wonders of the world. Prashanth had to play twin brothers in a plot that mixed romance and slapstick comedy, with cutting-edge visual effects for the era.
Box office returns came in at 350 million rupees at the time.
That success earned him the nickname Top Star in the credits of his films. But the pressure to maintain that commercial status began to take its toll in the following years. Competition from new actors and a series of script choices that failed to connect with younger audiences slowed his release pace. Between 2003 and 2006, the industry changed how it consumed action cinema, and the actor found himself in a middle ground.
And the bet on purely family-friendly films did not always pay off.
The 2010s were a period of damage control. Prashanth stepped away from the media spotlight to focus on projects produced by his own family, which aimed to recapture lost glory. In 2011, he starred in Mambattiyan, a new version of a hit that his father had led decades earlier. The film aimed to win back rural audiences, but its box office results in major cities were modest.
But the actor never stopped training or searching for the right script for his maturity. He knew that nostalgia in the Indian market moves in cycles. So he waited for the right moment to join major ensemble productions, where his veteran presence would add real value.
In 2024, he took part in The Greatest of All Time alongside star Vijay, playing a key role in an international espionage plot. That same year, he released Andhagan, the Tamil adaptation of the thriller Andhadhun, in which he played a pianist who feigns a visual impairment. The final budget of The Greatest of All Time exceeded 4,000 million rupees.
