Quintessa Swindell was born in 1997 and spent her childhood in Virginia. Her upbringing was shaped by a close relationship with her father, who instilled in her a deep love of classic cinema. But the comfort of home was not enough for someone who needed to explore an identity that still had no clear role models on screen.
In 2017, she moved to New York to study at the Tisch School of the Arts. Her time at university was brief, as professional opportunities arrived before she could hang her diploma on the wall. After leaving classes, she looked for auditions that embraced her non-binary identity without reducing it to a cliché.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2019, they landed the role of Tabitha Foster in the Netflix series Trinkets. The show followed a group of teenage kleptomaniacs and allowed them to showcase a cool, understated acting style that the industry values highly. The shoot lasted two seasons and helped put their name on the radar of Los Angeles casting directors for big-budget projects.
The film industry often pigeonholes new faces in teen dramas, but Swindell broke that pattern early. In 2021, she took part in the science fiction film Voyagers under the direction of Neil Burger. She shared the screen with Colin Farrell in a story about a space mission where human morality breaks down under isolation.
That same year, she worked on the fourth season of In Treatment for HBO. Playing Laila required her to hold long takes and dense dialogue opposite Uzo Aduba. It was an exercise in acting endurance that erased any doubt about her ability to handle complex material.
In 2022, a call came from Warner Bros inviting her to join the DC Comics universe. Swindell took on the role of Cyclone in the film Black Adam alongside Dwayne Johnson. For this shoot, she had to train in dance techniques that would help define her character's fluid movements during the visual effects sequences.
The project had a budget of $200 million.
Working in superhero franchises often pulls actors away from auteur cinema. But in 2022, Paul Schrader chose her to star in Master Gardener. The director of Taxi Driver was looking for someone who could hold her own opposite Joel Edgerton in a murky story about the past and redemption on the grounds of a historic plantation.
Schrader noted that Swindell has a gaze that conveys tension without needing words. In this film, she played Maya, a young woman who arrives at the estate of a wealthy woman to learn the craft of gardening while fleeing a violent environment. The premiere at the Venice Film Festival confirmed that her career did not depend solely on special effects.
Because the industry values composure in quiet moments.
In 2024, her role in the thriller Final Destiny was announced. The shoot for this production was planned across international locations to take advantage of specific tax incentives. The film features a crew that includes cinematographers awarded at European festivals and maintains an independent production profile with secured worldwide distribution.
The film Master Gardener wrapped its theatrical run with 1.1 million dollars in worldwide box office earnings.
