Reina Triendl is not the typical pretty face that the Japanese agency system exploits and discards after a couple of seasons. In 2015, director Sion Sono had her running through rice fields while her classmates were cut in half by an invisible wind in Tag. That was the exact moment when auteur cinema discovered that behind her porcelain image was an actress capable of carrying the weight of a surreal narrative.
She was born in Vienna in 1992. Her father is Austrian and her mother is Japanese, a background that worked like a magnet for cosmetics brands in Tokyo's advertising market in the early 2000s. But her massive success in magazines such as Vivi didn't satisfy her desire to act. So she began looking for roles that would break away from the picture-perfect model image.
And the gamble paid off.
For years, her presence on Terrace House as a panelist made her extremely popular with the general public. That was a double-edged sword. Audiences saw her as the friendly girl who analyzed other people's romances from a couch, not as an actress with dramatic range. She knew she had to break that mold before the character swallowed the performer.
In 2021, she landed the lead role in Watashi no Otto wa Reitoko ni Nemutteiru. In this thriller, she plays a woman who kills her husband and stores him in the freezer, only to see him reappear alive and smiling at the breakfast table the next day. It was her rawest and darkest performance, moving her decisively away from the sweetness advertisers demanded of her.
That shoot was physically exhausting because of the script's emotional demands. But Reina Triendl proved she could handle psychological suspense without missing a beat. Japanese critics began to take her seriously beyond the commercial circuit of fashion magazines.
It hasn't been a straight path to prestige.
She took on smaller projects and fast-paced romantic comedies that didn't add much to her filmography. But in 2023, she got back on track with Kono Subarashiki Sekai, where she handled comedic timing with a precision few expected from her. In that series, she proved that control of her body language is one of her best technical tools.
In 2024, she got involved in the drama Is This Love Checkmate? to explore power dynamics in the workplace. She no longer plays the naive young woman looking for love. Her characters at this stage show a calculated coolness that fits her personal evolution after turning thirty.
Her ability to switch between independent film and major television productions has given her a level of financial independence that is rare in Japan's entertainment industry. Reina Triendl manages her own schedule with a European mindset that sometimes clashes with the rigid routines of Tokyo studios.
She prefers silence to constant public exposure.
In 2025, her focus has shifted toward short-run projects with high visual quality. She looks for stories that don't rely solely on her physical image. During the filming of her final scenes that year, she insisted on minimal makeup to highlight the real exhaustion of her character.
The production of her latest TV drama in 2024 drew an average audience share of 7.4% in its nighttime slot.
