Rick Fox didn't wait until retiring from the court to realize his physique fit better on a set than on a bench. In 1994, he appeared in Blue Chips under the direction of William Friedkin while he was still playing for the Boston Celtics. It was a small role. But it taught him that the language of film demanded a discipline similar to that of the hardwood.
His move to Los Angeles in 1997 to sign with the Lakers was not just a sports decision. The actor wanted to be close to recording studios. Because while he was winning NBA championship rings, Fox used his summers to play characters far removed from his own biography.
In 1997, he joined the cast of Oz, the HBO prison drama that redefined television fiction. Playing Jackson Vane forced him to shed his public image as a media star. There were no spotlights or applause there, just the harshness of a maximum-security prison.
The actor had devoured the athlete.
His definitive exit from professional basketball in 2004 accelerated the pace of his screen work. He appeared in One Tree Hill and Dirt, building up experience across very different formats. But Fox has always preferred the security of supporting roles with narrative weight over leading mediocre projects.
In 2015 he decided that conventional screens weren't the only place he could build a business. He founded Echo Fox to professionalize the competitive video game industry in the United States. It was a high-risk financial bet that ended with the sale of its assets in 2019 after several legal disputes with his investor partners.
That stage showed that his interest in entertainment went beyond pure acting. And the market took notice. During those years he balanced front-office work with appearances in series such as Shameless or Greenleaf, where he played Darius Nash in a twenty-six-episode arc.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2021 he got involved in producing content focused on environmental sustainability. He wasn't after the easy applause of red-carpet activism. His goal was to use his ability to draw people together to fund housing structures built with carbon-absorbing materials.
His work pace didn't slow down when the decade changed. In 2023 he shot The Retirement Plan, an action comedy in which he shared the bill with Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman. In this film he played Christopher, a character that allowed him to showcase a comedic flair the industry had denied him for years.
Before accepting a script, he usually studies the project's commercial viability. Because Fox sees filmmaking as a precision financial machine in which talent is just one more variable. So his decisions in his professional maturity are driven more by logistics than by vanity.
In 2024, he took part in the shoot of The 16th Step under the direction of James Kicklighter. The project was conceived as a psychological thriller with a tight budget. Filming took place mainly on locations in the state of Georgia.
Production on this film wrapped its shooting schedule with a fourteen-hour day of technical work.
