In 1991, she sold a million and a half copies of a nude photo book at just eighteen years old. Japan was not ready for Santa Fe. That photo volume shattered the entertainment industry's norms in Japan and put the young model at the center of an unprecedented media storm. But behind the commercial provocation was an actress who would take decades to be taken seriously by the harshest critics.
She made her film debut in Seven Days’ War in 1988.
The pressure of being a young star nearly destroyed her. In 1993, she canceled her wedding to sumo wrestler Takanohana, and the tabloids went after her thinness relentlessly. She moved to San Diego to recover from anorexia and the constant harassment of the press. At that point, nobody was betting on her return to the stage or on her survival in the industry.
In 2002, she shot The Twilight Samurai under the direction of Yoji Yamada. That performance earned her her first major recognition from the Japan Academy Film Prize. She was no longer the fashion magazine girl. She was an actress capable of holding silence on screen without apparent effort.
And the public understood.
She worked with Jun Ichikawa on Tony Takitani over 2004. In that film, she played two different roles and showed that her physical presence could be both ethereal and heavy at the same time. Miyazawa delivers performances where fragility is just an outer layer over an iron will. Arthouse cinema found in her an ally for stories of loneliness and urban alienation.
In 2014, she starred in Pale Moon. She played a bank teller who begins embezzling funds to finance a life of luxury with a younger lover. She won the Best Actress award at the Tokyo International Film Festival. That role confirmed that her teen idol phase was over for good, making way for a character actress.
In 2016, she led the cast of Her Love Boils Bathwater. That story about a sick mother trying to bring her family together before she dies earned her another national award. But she did not stop at tearjerker drama and sought out projects with a stronger political edge.
She appeared in the historical series The 13 Lords of the Shogun in 2022. Her role as Lady Maki was one of the key pieces of the power plot on NHK. In 2023, she returned to dark cinema with The Moon, a film about violence in special care facilities. The film received mixed reviews for its extreme harshness, but her work was unanimously praised.
She still lives in Tokyo and keeps a low profile outside of filming.
Production of The Moon in 2023 had an estimated budget of three million dollars, and filming was concentrated in various locations in Kanagawa Prefecture.
