Issey Ogata is not your typical method actor. His career grew out of an almost clinical study of the gray everyday types who fill commuter trains in Japan. For years, he dissected the loneliness of the average citizen through his famous comedy monologues in tiny theaters.
The stage was his laboratory.
In the mid-1970s, he began building a catalog of characters nobody else wanted to look at. They were mediocre types and bureaucrats sweating under their suits while trying to keep up appearances. Yet Ogata gave them a strange, almost painful dignity. Japanese television tried to pigeonhole him into easy comedy, but he preferred to stay in independent theater, where he controlled every gesture of his body.
In 2004, he starred in Tony Takitani, directed by Jun Ichikawa. Based on a short story by Haruki Murakami, it was a role in which Ogata had to play two different characters. International critics noticed his ability to fill the emptiness on screen with barely a raised eyebrow. And the gamble paid off.
Many Western directors came to see him as the actor capable of embodying the complexity of Japanese history. Alexander Sokurov cast him in The Sun in 2005. Ogata inhabited the role of Emperor Hirohito during the final days of World War II. He managed to humanize a deity without resorting to cheap judgment or historical parody.
It was a technical and restrained performance.
Martin Scorsese called him for Silence in 2016. In this production, he played Inoue Masashige, the inquisitor tasked with hunting down Christians in 17th-century Japan. His performance was a disturbing mix of extreme courtesy and absolute cruelty. He stole every scene from the American leads thanks to a physicality that recalled his days as a mime.
In 2021 she appeared in Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle. Here she played the officer who orders the surrender of the last Japanese soldier who kept fighting for decades after the war ended. Ogata shows the passage of time on her own face with an unsettling naturalness, and she does it without unnecessary prosthetics.
He doesn't need big speeches to explain failure.
In 2023, he voiced the Gray Heron character in Hayao Miyazaki's animated film The Boy and the Heron. For this role, he had to record extremely long audio sessions searching for specific guttural tones. The Ghibli studio recorded more than fifty different takes just for the character's breathing sounds.
