Robin Givens arrived on the sets of New York with a science background she never ended up using. She was 14 years old when she started filming commercials and barely 20 when she landed her first speaking role on The Cosby Show.
It was the start of a media exposure that would end up consuming her acting talent for decades.
In 1986, she landed the role of Darlene Merriman in the comedy Head of the Class. That ABC series gave her stability for five full seasons. But her life changed completely outside the scripts when she met the man who would define her public image in the eyes of the whole world.
In 1988, she married Mike Tyson, and boxing mixed with the crime headlines. The marriage lasted barely a year (ending in a multimillion-dollar divorce in 1989), and the press of the time branded her America's official villain. Tabloids accused her of being manipulative while she tried to get casting directors to take her seriously again.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1992, she got her professional footing back with Boomerang. She played Jacqueline Broyer, a relentless executive who treated men like disposable objects. That job alongside Eddie Murphy proved she could carry a 40 million dollar production without her private life sinking the box office.
During the nineties, she took part in projects of varying quality, such as Blankman in 1994 or the action comedy Foreign Student. But the Hollywood studio system didn't quite know where to fit a Black woman with such a strong personality. So she decided to take refuge in theater and in guest appearances on television.
In 1996, she starred in her own sitcom titled The Cosby Mysteries. The project didn't last long. The industry was changing, and leading roles for women with her profile began to dry up outside the independent film circuit.
Cable television offered her a second career that was much calmer.
In 2017, she joined the cast of Riverdale to play Sierra McCoy, the town's mayor. This role allowed her to connect with a teen audience that had no idea who Mike Tyson was and didn't remember the magazine covers of the eighties. In 2021, she moved into the DC Comics universe with the series Batwoman, where she brought Jada Jet to life during the show's third season.
Robin Givens didn't just wait for calls from her agent. She started studying the technical language of the set. In 2020, she directed the feature film A Murderer Upstairs for the Lifetime network. She wasn't looking for praise from specialized critics (she wanted total control over the narrative and the framing).
That stage of her career as a director was solidified with the film The Products of the American Ghetto in 2018 and several episodes of series for the BET network. In 2022, she worked under Steven Soderbergh in the film Kimi, where she played the protagonist's mother. It was a brief but tough role.
And then came technical maturity.
In 2024, she joined the cast of The Family Business: New Orleans, a crime drama filmed in Louisiana and Georgia. The production had a crew of 120 people and was distributed through the BET+ platform in July. The series' syndication contract prohibits the release of footage from the shoot before its official broadcast.
