The Price of Korean Precocity

Roh Jeong-eui started working in the entertainment industry before turning ten. In 2011, she appeared in the drama Bachelor's Vegetable Store, and from that point on, her face became linked with the younger versions of Seoul's biggest stars. It's a career path we know well in Spain through the phenomenon of child prodigies, but in South Korea this process involves a military-style discipline that leaves no room for a conventional childhood.

For nearly a decade, she played the younger selves of other actresses in projects such as Angel Eyes and Pinocchio, both from 2014. She wasn't a star, but she was a familiar face that casting directors called on to ensure reliability in the first episodes of series. In that market, shooting time is money, and nobody wants to lose hours reshooting takes with a young performer who doesn't know where to stand in front of the camera.

And the system shaped her without mercy.

In 2016, she appeared in the movie Phantom Detective alongside Lee Je-hoon. The shoot was a technical turning point, because she had to handle dramatic range that went beyond her age. But her true transition wouldn't come until the industry and her own physical development allowed her to stop being someone's daughter and start being the lead of her own story.

Breaking the Youth Mold

The year 2020 changed how specialist critics saw her thanks to 18 Again. In this series, she played Hong Si-ah, a teenager with a rebellious shell that hid a maturity forced on her by her parents' divorce. It was the first time Korean media stopped seeing her as a little girl and started analyzing her ability to carry the narrative weight of a complex subplot.

But widespread recognition came in 2021 with Our Beloved Summer. Her role as NJ, a successful idol who struggles with the loneliness and emptiness of stardom, earned her the Best Actress (Rookie) award at the SBS Drama Awards in 2021. The performance was surgical because Roh Jeong-eui knew firsthand what it feels like to be under the spotlight since childhood. The pain she projected on screen was therefore rooted in her own life story.

Her public image changed dramatically during that period.

She appeared on fashion magazine covers with a much sharper, more mature look. In 2022, she took on the role of host of the music show Inkigayo, a position that in the Korean industry works as a gauge of true popularity. She hosted the show until April 2023, which allowed her to connect with a young audience that didn't necessarily watch her earlier dramas.

Her move into big-budget productions

In 2024 the actress decided to bet on projects from global streaming platforms with budgets that exceed traditional television standards. In January 2024, she premiered the film Badland Hunters on Netflix, a post-apocalyptic action movie in which she shared the screen with Ma Dong-seok. The shoot demanded grueling physical preparation for the risky scenes set in digital environments.

Shortly after, she led the cast of Hierarchy, a 2024-episode series set at an elite high school where class struggle drives the story. She plays Jae-i, the queen of the school. It's a role that demands total restraint and a cold stare, a far cry from her early days in romantic comedy. But the industry doesn't forgive mistakes in high-budget productions like this one.

The series was filmed under a strict confidentiality agreement.

Roh Jeong-eui has managed her career with cold, calculated precision to avoid the fate that many child actors face when they grow up and fade from view. In 2024, her name appeared on lists of the most bankable actresses for Korean luxury brands. The distribution deal for her latest Netflix series hit record figures in the Asian market during the first quarter of 2024. Her salary per episode is estimated at tens of millions of won, according to financial reports from the film industry in Seoul.
