Rose McIver doesn't remember her first day on set. She was only two years old when Jane Campion chose her to appear in The Piano in 1993. It was a tiny role, but it helped New Zealand's film industry spot a little girl who could stay still in front of a spotlight. During her childhood in Auckland, she took on nonstop commercials and supporting roles in fantasy TV movies such as Hercules or Xena: Warrior Princess.
That little girl was not a typical child star.
She juggled filming with her psychology and linguistics studies at the University of Auckland. But in 2009, Peter Jackson cast her to play Lindsey Salmon in The Lovely Bones. That film was her direct ticket to Los Angeles. It wasn't an easy landing, since Hollywood often devours foreign actors who don't have a backup plan.
Before the general public knew her name, she wore a spandex suit. In 2009, she accepted the role of Yellow Ranger in Power Rangers RPM. It was a physically demanding job that taught her how to manage the schedules of big-budget productions. Shortly after, she had guest roles in acclaimed series such as Masters of Sex, where she played Vivian Scully between 2013 and 2014.
And then the brains showed up.
In 2015, she signed the contract that would change her career. She starred in iZombie for five seasons, playing Olivia Moore. The role required her to change personality in every episode depending on the memories of the dead man she consumed. It was an endurance test as an actress that ended in 2019 after 71 episodes were shot.
But her connection to the fantasy genre didn't end there. She played Tinker Bell in Once Upon a Time and starred in the holiday trilogy A Christmas Prince for Netflix between 2017 and 2019. These movies became a viewing phenomenon during the winter holidays despite the coolness of specialist critics.
Her career took a different turn toward traditional sitcoms in 2021. The American version of Ghosts put her at the center of an ensemble cast on CBS. She plays Samantha, a woman who, after a car accident, starts seeing the ghosts haunting her new country house. The show was an immediate ratings hit in the United States.
She managed to connect with a massive audience.
In 2023, she married artist George Byrne in a private ceremony in the United States. During filming of the third season of Ghosts in 2024, she announced her pregnancy, and the production team had to use body doubles and specific camera angles to hide her condition. The series was renewed for a fourth season, whose preproduction began at the end of that same year.
Despite her media exposure, McIver keeps a low profile, staying away from industry events. In 2024, her per-episode salary for network television was estimated to be between 150,000 and 250,000 dollars per episode.
