In 2002, the anime industry first took notice of Ryo Hirohashi as Rakka in Haibane Renmei. There were no big announcements. Her voice carried a fragility that suited the melancholic aesthetic of the series. Yet that softness concealed a technical resilience that would help her survive an industry that tends to devour new talent every season.
And the big break came soon enough.
In 2003, Hirohashi took on the challenge of playing Sora Naegino in Kaleido Star. It was her first major lead role, directed by Junichi Sato. The character demanded a physical energy that contrasted with her previous work. In Japanese animation, the voice has to sweat just like the drawing, and she managed to convey that real exhaustion in the acrobatic scenes.
The gamble paid off.
That year marked a shift in her workload. Aoni Production saw that her tone could fit very different characters, so she moved from thoughtful dramas to fast-paced comedies without losing her precision in timing at the microphone.
In 2003, a key event also marked her international breakthrough. Hirohashi was chosen to voice Tails in Sonic X. What began as an assignment for a television series ended up making her the official voice of Tails in all the video games of the Sega franchise. She has held this role ever since, tying her to one of the most profitable brands in global entertainment.
But Japanese critics truly took notice with Clannad in 2007. Her portrayal of Kyou Fujibayashi revealed a more aggressive and protective side. In this role, she avoided the excesses of moe and built a character with layers of cynicism and tenderness. Fans of the original visual novel embraced her work right away.
And the industry kept calling.
During 2010, she worked on Working!!, bringing Yamada Aoi to life. Here she explored absurd humor and controlled improvisation. This role allowed her to move away from the classic heroine image and embrace more eccentric, less perfect characters. In Japan, this kind of role often determines a seiyū's longevity once she passes the age of thirty.
In 2014, Hirohashi took on the role of Luna in Sailor Moon Crystal, inheriting it from Keiko Han. Replacing Keiko Han was no simple task given the weight of nostalgia. Still, she chose an interpretation that respected the original material without artificially imitating her predecessor's work.
Since 2016, she has voiced Minoru Mineta in My Hero Academia. She is a divisive character who is often unlikable to viewers. Still, she brings a comedic energy that smooths out the rough edges of the script. She has managed to stay relevant in a massive production with more than two decades of accumulated history in the industry.
In 2021, she joined the project Genshin Impact, voicing Diona. This contract with HoYoverse introduced her to the live-service game market, with a global audience of millions of players. Recording for these titles requires isolated sessions that depend entirely on the actress's ability to imagine the scene without fellow cast members.
In 2024, Hirohashi joined the cast of Blue Archive The Animation, voicing Sora under Yostar Pictures' production.
