A student played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, an ordinary young woman with nothing to set her apart from the rest, leads a quiet life in Tokyo. The story places her in a modest house in the city whose facade reveals nothing unusual. From the first few minutes, the film makes clear that the inside of the house holds something very different. According to the film's premise, the curse is born when someone dies consumed by extreme rage or sorrow, and it lingers in the place where the death occurred. Anyone who encounters it does not survive. Directed by Takashi Shimizu, the film presents events in a nonlinear timeline, with several subplots that intersect with one another.

Trivia about The Grudge

Sarah Michelle Gellar shot her scenes in Tokyo and then returned to the city for reshoots in July 2004.
The film sparked a trend of Japanese and Asian horror remakes in the 2000s, with titles such as Dark Water (2005) and Pulse (2006).
In its first week on DVD, it brought in 9.24 million dollars and debuted in second place in sales, behind Ray.
Critic Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave it one star out of four and criticized its fragmented timeline.
