Sam Levinson spent much of his youth in and out of rehab centers and emergency rooms. His addiction to opioids for nearly a decade is no minor detail of his biography. It fuels the raw edge of his scripts and his urge to portray the abyss.
The darkness was not an aesthetic choice but a memory.
Son of the Oscar-winning Barry Levinson (director of Rain Man), young Sam grew up on film sets but took a long time to find his own voice. In 2011, he premiered Another Happy Day at the Sundance Film Festival. The film won the award for best screenplay, a prestigious honor, though its commercial reception was practically nonexistent.
But the real change of pace came in 2018 with Assassination Nation. It was an experiment on mass hysteria and social media that flopped at the U.S. box office. Neon paid $10 million for it and recouped only $2 million during its theatrical run.
Then came 2019. Levinson adapted an Israeli series of the same name to create Euphoria. The HBO production broke with the traditional aesthetic of teen drama through neon lighting and impossible camera movements.
He wrote every line of the series and directed nearly all the episodes of the first two seasons. This obsession with total control gave him absolute visual consistency. Creative control was non-negotiable for him.
In 2021, he took advantage of pandemic restrictions to shoot Malcolm & Marie. It was a black-and-white chamber film with just two actors in a single location. Netflix paid $30 million at a private auction to acquire the film's rights.
His style is built on constant confrontation.
Levinson isn't after easy audience empathy but discomfort through excess. In 2022, the second season of his flagship series doubled the audience of the first and sparked massive debate over how trauma is portrayed on screen.
The year 2023 marked his first major media setback with the premiere of The Idol. The production ran into serious trouble after its original director left, and Levinson took over to rebuild the project from scratch. Costs soared during the months of reshoots in Los Angeles.
The reception at the Cannes Film Festival was devastating. The specialized press attacked the series' narrative and approach, and it was canceled after airing only five episodes. It was a sharp blow to his streak of commercial hits.
The ratings failure was as resounding as the media uproar it generated.
After that setback, the director focused on writing the third season of Euphoria. Filming was scheduled to begin in January 2025 but was delayed several times by the screenwriters' strikes and changes in cast availability. The final production budget for these episodes was over $10 million per episode.
