Sam Reid graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 2010. The day after graduation, he already had a role lined up in Anonymous by Roland Emmerich. There was no time for unemployment or the doubts that usually plague newly graduated drama students, because the British market immediately embraced him as the perfect face for period drama.
In 2013, he appeared in Belle and shared the screen with Colin Firth in The Railway Man. His classic gentleman look opened doors to productions where gala costumes and refined manners were the norm. But Reid was looking for something that would break that porcelain aesthetic. In 2014, he shot ’71, a thriller set against the conflicts in Northern Ireland that let him get his hands dirty and step away from Victorian ballrooms.
And the gamble paid off.
Despite his Australian roots, his career took shape in the United Kingdom, with a consistency that few of his fellow countrymen manage to maintain without moving to Los Angeles. He worked on prestige television projects such as Prime Suspect 1973, where he played Len Bradfield. On that shoot, he showed that his talent for police drama was as solid as his skill with period dialogue. So his return to Australia in 2021 to star in The Newsreader was not a retreat but a triumphant comeback as a major actor.
In 2022, he took on the challenge that permanently changed his international profile. AMC cast him to play Lestat de Lioncourt in Interview with the Vampire. The shadow of Tom Cruise's performance in 1994 loomed large, and fans of Anne Rice's novels viewed the casting with obvious skepticism. Reid ignored the comparisons and immersed himself in the original text to build a more volatile and less glamorous character than his predecessors.
It was a risky decision.
The production demanded considerable physical and mental effort. Reid had to learn to play the piano and speak with a fluent French accent that wouldn't come across as caricatured to modern audiences. In the second season, which aired in 2024, his performance became darker and more technical as the story moved to postwar Paris. Professional critics noted that his version of Lestat brought a vulnerability never seen before in adaptations of the novel.
But success on cable television didn't stop him from pursuing independent film. By 2017, he had already worked on 222 alongside Michiel Huisman, and he has always kept one foot in projects outside the big franchises. Reid prefers scripts where inner conflict carries more weight than special effects. For him, acting is a process of personal demolition rather than a pursuit of instant fame.
And the industry took notice.
His AMC contract was extended after the strong ratings for the second season. Production on the third season of Interview with the Vampire was scheduled for late 2024, with a budget that exceeded those of the early episodes. Filming was set in European locations to preserve the historical authenticity of Rice's narrative. Reid signed a partial exclusivity clause that allowed him to shoot other smaller projects during the series' breaks.
The budget per episode of the series reached 10 million dollars during its most ambitious phase.
