Saygın Soysal

The making of the stone-faced star

Saygın Soysal was born in Ankara in May 1982, and his first instinct was not to seek the camera but the stage of the conservatory. He studied at Hacettepe University because he believed technique always comes before charisma. In 2005, he made his debut in the series Güz Yangını with a role that barely hinted at his potential.

And the phone started ringing.

In 2006 he played a young Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Hatırla Sevgili. It was a politically and professionally challenging role, which he handled with a restraint rare for a 24-year-old actor. But his real breakout came with Asi between 2007 and 2009. He played Arslan and proved he could carry a rural storyline without slipping into melodrama.

His theater training helped him avoid the pitfalls of Turkish commercial television. In 2009 he took part in the film Kosmos, directed by Reha Erdem. The film won the Best Film award at the Antalya Film Festival and put Soysal on the radar of the most discerning arthouse cinema.

The Realm of Shadows

Many actors fear being typecast as the villain of the story. Soysal, by contrast, seems to enjoy the dark margins of the script. His work on Kara Para Aşk in 2014 earned him international recognition that few had predicted. In that production he brought Fatih to life, a character who moved between cruelty and an almost childlike vulnerability.

Her technique rests on silence.

Because Soysal relies on his gaze more than gestures to convey the inner tension of a scene. In 2013, he appeared in Muhteşem Yüzyıl as Mercan Ağa. It was a supporting role, but his physical presence in the corridors of the Ottoman palace proved more unsettling than that of many leading characters.

In 2017 he filmed Payitaht Abdülhamid, playing Theodor Herzl. The actor had to work on dialectical restraint to portray a real historical figure within a big-budget fictional production. Projects like this required him to study languages and dialects to adjust his vocal range to the demands of the era.

From Historical Drama to Science Fiction

In 2018 he joined the cast of The Protector, Netflix's first major bet in Turkey. He played Mergen, and his involvement stretched across several seasons. Here the actor had to adapt to a frenetic production pace and to visual effects that demanded pinpoint precision on the set.

The industry changed, and he was there.

In 2021, he took on the role of Savaş in Maraşlı. It was another exercise in coldness, where wardrobe and body language defined the character before he spoke a single line. In 2024, he joined the action series Teşkilat to play Gert. Filming this production required specific physical training to choreograph the combat scenes on location.

The series Hakim marked his return to legal drama in 2022, with him playing a character named Cevdet. In 2024, the actor kept his home in Istanbul and managed his career by steering clear of the gossip-column social events. The contract for his latest television production included a confidentiality clause about the number of episodes in his story arc.
