Sebastián Rulli didn't start out memorizing lines from Anton Chekhov or dreaming of treading the boards at the Teatro San Martín. In the nineties, he spent his afternoons balancing accounts at a school of economics in Buenos Aires. That didn't last long.

European runways in Milan, Paris and Madrid were paying his rent. But in 1999, he bought a one-way ticket to Mexico City to enroll in Televisa's Centro de Educación Artística.

He was twenty-five years old and had a thick porteño accent that Mexican television required him to smooth out at high speed with speech therapy.

Nobody expected him to survive the cliché.

The Square-Jawed Leading Man Trap

In 2000, he made his debut with a supporting role in Primer amor, a mil por hora. Three years later, he went on to star in Clase 406 and Alegrijes y rebujos, quick-consumption afternoon series designed to make the most of school advertising.

His move into heavy commercial drama came in 2004 with Rubi. His role as Héctor Ferrer, the well-off architect who loses his mind and his fortune over a ruthless villainess, reached screen shares above 35% in Mexico and the United States.

The industry immediately typecast him as the blond leading man tormented by fatal passions. But Rulli quickly grasped the mechanics of serialized melodrama.

Rather than fighting the genre, he chose to discipline himself in his craft. He learned to cry on camera in the second take, to memorize thirty pages of script at dawn, and to endure fourteen-hour shooting days under lights that melted his makeup.

From Classic Melodrama to the Streaming Algorithm

In 2010, José Alberto Castro's production paired him with Angelique Boyer in Teresa. The chemistry between them worked so well in the ratings that Televisa turned the pairing into a profitable formula.

They reteamed as leads in What Life Took From Me in 2013 and in Tres veces Ana in 2016. Audiences embraced the romantic and professional partnership as a guaranteed commercial hit in the 9 p.m. prime-time slot.

And the formula kept on paying off.

But the traditional TV model began to give way to digital distribution. In 2019, Rulli took the lead role in El Dragón: Return of a Warrior, a co-production written by Arturo Pérez-Reverte that cost nearly one million dollars per episode.

There, he played a finance expert educated in Tokyo who managed organized crime's money laundering using mathematical algorithms. It was a deliberate move to shed the tears of classic soap operas and enter the aesthetic of the international thriller.

Recycled formulas and production balance sheets

In 2022, he took on the challenge of reviving Los ricos también lloran, playing the character that had launched Rogelio Guerra to fame four decades earlier. In 2023, he shot all eight episodes of the paranormal thriller Más allá de ti for the ViX platform.

In 2024, he reunited with Boyer on set to film the adaptation of El extraño retorno de Diana Salazar. The series featured seventeenth-century costumes and post-production visual effects designed to appeal to mature subscribers in the Hispanic market.

Rulli crossed the fifty-year mark in front of the cameras without giving up his physical discipline or turning his back on the industrial system that funded his entire career.

For the 2026 season, he signed on to the television drama Mi rival, directed by Enrique Arroyo under a tightly planned shoot of eighty episodes filmed entirely on indoor sets at the San Ángel studios.
