Synopsis of El Dragón: Return of a Warrior

Miguel Garza grew up in Japan, far from the family business. His family runs a drug cartel in Mexico, and he stays out of it until the time comes to take over. The story begins in Ciudad Jiménez, Mexico, where a bombing kills his parents. His brothers and he survive, and the kingpin Lamberto Garza decides to send him out of the country to train him as a successful businessman. Created by Arturo Pérez-Reverte and starring Sebastián Rulli, the series airs on Univision.

Trivia about El Dragón: Return of a Warrior

The idea came out of a meeting in Madrid between Arturo Pérez-Reverte and Patricio Wills, who wanted to explore how the grandson of a drug lord would act when inheriting an empire.

The production was announced in 2016 and took several years of development and hundreds of auditions.

Filming began on November 13, 2018 under the working title El último dragón and wrapped on July 25, 2019.

To play Miguel Garza, Sebastián Rulli trained in aikido for seven months.

El Dragón was set to be the first Televisa production to premiere on a streaming platform before it aired on television.

The first season ranked among Netflix's top ten most-watched shows in Mexico.

Filming took place in Tokyo, Madrid, Miami and several cities in Mexico, an mix of international locations that required moving the production between several countries.

The second season drew an average audience of 1.16 million viewers on Univision and ended with 1.73 million on January 20, 2020.
