The face that broke the Korean mold

Shin Hyun-joon didn't enter film through the door reserved for teen idols. In 1990, director Im Kwon-taek was looking for fresh faces for General's Son and came across a track athlete whose nose was too big for the standards of the time. That Hayashi role gave him a name before he had refined his technique.

His look was always a problem for more traditional casting directors. In South Korea, he's known for his uncommon features (almost Middle Eastern), and that kept him away from conventional leading-man roles during his early years. But that same difference allowed him to take on the fantasy genre in 1996 with The Ginkgo Bed.

He played a villainous general trapped in time, and audiences connected with his menacing gaze. It was his first major box office hit, which validated his screen presence beyond being the exotic supporting player.

And then the industry stopped seeing him as a risk.

In the late nineties, his name appeared in the credits of the country's most ambitious blockbusters. In 2000, he starred in Bichunmoo, a martial arts film shot in China that cost a fortune by the standards of the time. Critics were harsh about his performance, but the film grossed millions across Asia and solidified his status as a bankable star.

From Tearjerker Dramas to Mafia Comedy

In 2003, the phenomenon of Stairway to Heaven arrived. This TV series captivated the country and brought her a level of popular affection that film had denied her. She played the devoted Han Tae-hwa, and his on-screen death is still remembered on Korean drama forums as a moment of collective trauma.

But Shin Hyun-joon didn't want to be the perpetual sufferer of afternoon TV. So in 2006, he decided to take a turn toward absurd comedy with the Marrying the Mafia series. Many critics thought taking on such over-the-top roles would ruin his career.

Box office ruled over prestige.

The second installment of that franchise sold more than five million tickets in South Korea alone. Shin understood that his serious face worked best when it was put to the service of the ridiculous. During those boom years for Korean cinema, the actor took on one shoot after another in which physical comedy was the rule rather than the exception.

His work pace slowed starting in 2010 due to a series of problems with his former agent. The legal dispute dragged on for months and cooled his relationship with the major Seoul production companies. During that time, he turned to university teaching and writing children's books (a side of him that few people outside his inner circle knew about).

Return to Pure Action Cinema

In 2013, he married a woman outside the entertainment industry, and his priority became his family. They had three children, and his on-screen appearances were limited to variety shows where he showed his everyday life. It seemed the action actor had retired for good to be a full-time father.

But in 2023, he returned to the genre that made him famous with the film The Assassin. At 54 years old, he spent months training to shoot sword scenes without stunt doubles in most takes. It was a personal bet to prove his body could still carry the weight of a leading man.

The shoot was tough, and his knees took more punishment than they should have.

In 2024, he took part in the project Handsome Guy and kept a presence on TV shows such as The Manager. His career doesn't follow a straight line or chase the applause of specialized critics at European festivals. Shin Hyun-joon is an entertainment worker who gets paid to act and has been running his own cosmetics brand for years to secure his retirement.

The film George and Bong-sik sat on a shelf for years due to a lack of technical funding for post-production.
