Claude Pinoteau was looking for a new face in 1980. He found Sophie Danièle Sylvie Maupu. The thirteen-year-old girl changed her last name to that of a Paris street, and a phenomenon was born that France never expected.
The release of La Boum sold more than four million tickets in her country. The press dubbed her the sweetheart of France. But she hated the good-girl label before she turned eighteen.
And the gamble paid off.
She paid one million francs to free herself from the production company that wanted to typecast her. She did it to shoot L'Amour braque in 1985 under the direction of Andrzej Zulawski. Critics were horrified to see her covered in blood and mud.
That shoot marked the start of a professional relationship that lasted seventeen years. Marceau stopped being a consumer product for teenagers and moved into the most raw kind of auteur cinema. She needed to prove that her looks were not her only tool of the trade.
Mel Gibson cast her in Braveheart in 1995 because he wanted a beauty who didn't look like she'd just left a modern hair salon. That role as a French princess opened the doors of the global market for her without the need to move to Los Angeles.
In 1999, she accepted the role of villain Elektra King in The World Is Not Enough. It was one of the few times a Bond girl overshadowed agent 007 on screen. Her character was no decoration but the brains behind the criminal plot.
The American industry tempted her with long contracts.
She preferred to return to Europe to direct her own stories. In 2002, she premiered Parlez-moi d'amour and won the Best Director award in Montreal. Writing screenplays allowed her to control a story that others had always imposed on her.
During the 2010s, she alternated light comedies with mid-budget dramas. In 2021, she worked with François Ozon on Tout s'est bien passé, a story about a father's euthanasia. The shoot lasted just seven weeks in Paris.
For the film Une femme de notre temps from 2022, she had to train in archery for months. The film premiered at the Locarno Film Festival to a cold reception from international critics.
In 2024, the actress decided to step away from film sets to focus on promoting her short story collection. The publisher Seuil printed fifty thousand copies of the first edition.
