The Ambition of a Single Mother

Stella Stevens arrived in Los Angeles in 1959 with a suitcase and a four-year-old son in tow.

She wasn't chasing artistic glory but a steady paycheck to pay the bills. She signed a contract with 20th Century Fox because she needed the money, and she soon discovered that her looks were a very valuable bargaining chip in producers' offices.

Her debut in Say One for Me earned her the Golden Globe for New Star of the Year.

That award was a double-edged sword. The industry immediately typecast her in roles as a sizzling blonde (often naive), which she privately despised. But she knew how to play her cards to work with the most powerful directors of the era.

And she got it through sheer persistence.

A Refuge Behind the Camera

Her role in The Nutty Professor opposite Jerry Lewis in 1963 made her a global face. The chemistry between the two worked because Stevens brought a icy intelligence that contrasted with the comedian's antics.

Despite her accumulated fame, she never felt comfortable under the total control of the major studios. That's why she founded her own production company in the late seventies to direct her own projects.

In 1979, the documentary The American Heroine premiered.

She was one of the few actresses of her generation who dared to make the leap into directing in a deeply male-dominated Hollywood. She repeated the experience in 1989 with The Ranch (a comedy that went largely unnoticed by critics but allowed her to control every stage of the shoot).

A Final Chapter Away from the Spotlight

Stevens amassed more than 200 on-screen credits across film and television.

Throughout the nineties and the first years of the new century, she took refuge in B-movies and sporadic appearances on television series. She appeared in General Hospital and in Nash Bridges, where she proved her acting skills were still intact despite mediocre scripts.

Stella Stevens died on February 17, 2023, at age 84 from complications related to Alzheimer's.
