How Are You Going to Die?

Tree Gelbman is a college student who wakes up in the room of Carter Davis, a classmate, after a night of partying and drinking. It's her birthday, and the morning gets off to a rough start. Tree ignores a call from her father, sends Carter away and heads back to her room in the sorority house. There, her roommate Lori Spengler offers her a cupcake for her birthday, but Tree tosses it aside with contempt. The story takes place on a college campus in Louisiana, where tensions among the sorority sisters rise from the very first hours of the day. Directed by Christopher Landon and starring Jessica Rothe, the film follows a young woman who just wants a trouble-free birthday and runs into a series of conflicts that are only just beginning.

Trivia about Happy Death Day

Before it was called Happy Death Day, the project was titled Half to Death. In July 2007, it was announced with Megan Fox as the lead, back when Michael Bay and Rogue Pictures were still producing it.

The killer's mask was built by Tony Gardner, the same craftsman who made the Ghostface masks for every Scream film. Landon chose the baby mask after scaring a coworker.

The trailer used "In Da Club" by 50 Cent as Tree's ringtone, but Landon explained that the film could not afford to use that song. In the end, "Busy Day Birthday" was used instead.

The killer's mask is almost identical to that of "King Cake Baby," the mascot of the New Orleans Pelicans. Its creator sued Universal Pictures and Blumhouse for copyright infringement, demanding half of the profits.

With $26.5 million dollars in its opening weekend, the film topped the box office. It was the third Blumhouse Productions film of 2017 to achieve this, after Split and Get Out.

Filming lasted five weeks and took place at Loyola University New Orleans and the surrounding area. The scenes in which Tree wakes up in Carter's bed were shot back-to-back over just two days.

Jessica Rothe improvised the line about taking a date to Subway and ordering a 30-centimeter sub, according to director Christopher Landon.

The film grossed approximately $125.5 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $4.8 million.
