Synopsis of Utopia

A group of young adults and a boy get their hands on Utopia, an underground cult comic. They are fans of Dystopia, the work whose conclusion is Utopia, and they believe the comic contains prophetic information about diseases that have already struck the world. They soon discover that the comic has made them the target of a shadowy organization, which has also given them a dangerous task: to save the world. Created by Gillian Flynn, the series airs on Amazon Prime Video and stars Sasha Lane and John Cusack. The story follows how this makeshift group tries to decipher the comic while the pressure from those chasing them grows with every step they take.

Trivia about Utopia

Before Amazon, the project was at HBO with David Fincher as director, but it never got made after a financial dispute.

During the TCA virtual panel, showrunner Gillian Flynn announced that the American version would be less violent than the original British one.

Flynn hinted that the series would not have a single director throughout the season, but several directors across all eight episodes.

In its early development, in 2015, the cast included Rooney Mara, Colm Feore, Eric McCormack, Dallas Roberts, Jason Ritter, Brandon Scott and Agyness Deyn.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a 50% approval rating based on 46 reviews, with an average score of 6/10.

Gillian Flynn had already started working on the second season before the cancellation and explained that her story would have veered quite far from the second season of the British series.

Filming for the first season wrapped in October 2019, almost a year before its premiere, and the pandemic delayed post-production.
