Strangers should not talk to little girls.

Hayley is a fourteen-year-old girl who chats online with Jeff, a thirty-two-year-old photographer. After exchanging several messages, the two agree to meet at a coffee shop in Los Angeles. There, Jeff convinces her to come with him to his apartment, using the excuse of taking some photos. Inside the apartment, he offers her a drink, and the conversation starts to take an uncomfortable turn. Hayley refuses to accept anything she hasn't prepared herself and heads to the kitchen. The camera follows every move the two make in a confined space, where the tension builds with every gesture. Directed by David Slade, the film stars Patrick Wilson and Elliot Page.

Trivia about Hard Candy

Sandra Oh accepted the role because they wanted to work with Elliot Page, with whom they had already worked on Wilby Wonderful.

Hayley's red hooded sweatshirt is associated with Little Red Riding Hood, but the creative team didn't notice that similarity until long after choosing the wardrobe.

Filming took eighteen and a half days, mostly shot in story order and inside a studio.

According to director David Slade, raising the lights during filming and lowering them in post-production was something that had never been done in cinema before.

Only nine minutes of music play in the entire film, and most of the soundtrack consists of ambient sounds.

In its opening weekend, the film grossed 58,049 dollars, with a per-theater average of 29,704 dollars, the highest of the 50 top-grossing films.

The budget was kept below one million dollars to prevent the production company from demanding that the script be softened or changed because of its controversial content.

At test screenings, some viewers walked out and left their evaluation forms on the floor; the director explained that these sessions helped identify the audience the film should be aimed at.
