New York, Little Italy neighborhood. Charlie (Harvey Keitel) is a 27-year-old Italian American who roams the neighborhood streets with ambitions of earning a place in the mob. His plan is complicated by Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro), an impulsive friend who gambles recklessly, refuses to work and racks up debts with several loan sharks. Charlie feels he must answer for him and decides to help him settle those debts before the situation spirals out of control. Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film is driven by the weight of that loyalty: Charlie tries to pursue his own goals while covering for his friend, caught between family obligation and his desire to get ahead.
