My name is Ángela. They're going to kill me.

Ángela is studying Image and Sound at the Complutense University of Madrid and is preparing a thesis on violence in the audiovisual world. To move her research forward, she needs material, so she asks Chema, a classmate interested in violent images, especially in gore cinema, for help. Chema agrees to collaborate with her. The faculty, with its classrooms and hallways, is the first setting for an investigation that soon begins to drift away from the academic world. Thesis is directed by Alejandro Amenábar in his directing debut and stars Ana Torrent, Fele Martínez and Eduardo Noriega.

In total, 25,000 shots were filmed, but 3,200 were ultimately used. Amenábar worked with a shot ratio of 5:1.

Amenábar and Hans Burmann left out scenes such as the train accident so that viewers could imagine them, playing with light, shadows, and sound effects.

The character of Bosco, played by Eduardo Noriega, is named after the protagonist of Himenóptero (1992), one of Amenábar's short films.

In one scene, the database on the computers of the XT-500 camera displays the director's own name, as a cameo.

The movie was censored in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, the United States, and some areas of France, and its runtime was cut from 125 to 116 minutes.

«Thesis» was filmed mainly at the Faculty of Information Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid during the summer of 1995, when the facilities were empty due to the academic break.

The movie cost 116 million pesetas, roughly 696,000 euros, and grossed around 440 million pesetas, about 2.6 million euros.

«Thesis» won seven of the eight Goya Awards it was nominated for in 1997; it only lost Best Actress, which went to Emma Suárez for «El perro del hortelano».
