Synopsis of The Blue Planet

The Blue Planet is a nature documentary series that explores the world's oceans from start to finish. David Attenborough narrates and guides viewers through eight fifty-minute episodes, each focused on a different aspect of marine life. Filming teams work across the planet, from the most densely populated coastlines to the deepest zones, aiming to capture animals and behaviors that had never been filmed before. The series shows how sea creatures live, how climate, the moon, and tides influence their daily lives, and which biological system depends on the sea. The main challenge is that most of the ocean remains a mystery to science. It was created by Andy Byatt and Alastair Fothergill and airs on BBC One.

Trivia about The Blue Planet

The series took almost five years to film and involved roughly 200 filming locations, which gives a sense of the scale of the project.
The camera team spent three years waiting and used a microlight to land on the water near blue whales in the Gulf of California.
One of the submersibles allowed the team to descend more than a mile into the San Diego Trench, where the carcass of a 40-ton gray whale had been placed.
On its first airing on BBC One, more than 12 million people watched the series, which often reached a screen share of 30%.
In 2018, scientists named a newly discovered species of phytoplankton Syracosphaera azureaplaneta, in honor of the show.
The series won several Emmy and BAFTA TV Awards for its music and cinematography.
During production, the team carried out more than 400 days of failed or unproductive expeditions to film in open ocean, due to the difficulty of locating animals in that environment.
The producers located blue whales from the air after temporarily attaching radio transmitters to some of them, whose migration routes had been unknown until then.
